Practise Hindi typing in your exam's layout

Hindi typing tests for clerk, assistant and data entry posts are checked by software that knows the exact text, so small slips cost marks. The first step is to type in the right layout. This test supports the three that Indian candidates use most:

  • Inscript (Mangal): the standard Hindi keyboard built into Windows. Letters are typed in the same order as they are written: क then ि for कि.
  • Remington GAIL (Mangal): the old Hindi typewriter layout, producing Unicode text. ि is typed before the letter, and many half letters have their own key. The key map follows the Remington layout published by CPCT.
  • Krutidev 010: the same typewriter keys, saved in the legacy Kruti Dev font. Still used in some offices and state-level tests, so it is available in Practice mode.

You type on a normal English keyboard. The tool turns your keys into Hindi as you go, shows the next key on an on-screen keyboard, and at the end marks every mistake. Nothing needs to be installed, and nothing you type leaves your device.

How to take the Hindi typing test

  1. Choose Practice, SSC CHSL Hindi or CPCT Hindi. Exam modes set the official time.
  2. Select your keyboard layout and a passage. Keep Show keyboard and next-key hints on while you learn, and turn it off to test yourself.
  3. Click the typing box and start typing. The timer starts with your first key. Pasting is switched off.
  4. The test ends when time runs out, when you finish the passage, or when you press Submit.
  5. Read your result: speed, key depressions per hour, accuracy, and your text with full and half mistakes marked. Download the result card or copy the numbers.

Exam rules used in this test

ExamTimeRule
SSC CHSL (LDC/JSA), Hindi10 min (15 with scribe)30 wpm, about 9,000 key depressions an hour; Hindi in the Mangal font only; mistakes allowed in CHSL 2025: 7% UR, 10% other categories
CPCT Hindi15 min (20 for candidates with disabilities)Inscript or Remington (GAIL) in Unicode; score = net words per minute

The SSC rules are from the CHSL 2026 notice (para 13.9.13.7) and SSC's CHSL 2025 allocation notice of August 2026. The CPCT rules are from MPSEDC's Hindi typing instructions and typing assessment formula. Krutidev is not offered in the SSC and CPCT modes because both ask for Unicode. Many state and court recruitments set their own Hindi typing rules; we have not added them, so check your notice and use Practice mode with the time it gives.

How mistakes and speed are counted

Mistakes follow SSC's evaluation guidelines, which apply to Hindi and English scripts:

  • Full mistake: a missed word, a wrong word, an extra or repeated word, a spelling error (for example a missing matra or a wrong half letter) or an incomplete word.
  • Half mistake: a missing or extra space, a punctuation error such as a missing purna viram (।), or two words swapped. The capital-letter rule does not apply to Hindi.

Key depressions are the keys you pressed that remain in your text. Backspace and the keys you deleted are not counted, which matches CPCT's definition of keystroke count. Gross speed = key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes, net speed = gross speed − mistakes per minute, and error percentage = (full + half ÷ 2) ÷ passage words you reached × 100. In CPCT mode the result uses CPCT's formula instead: words are split at spaces and compared in order, and net words per minute = correct words ÷ minutes.

Using the on-screen keyboard

Under the typing box is a keyboard for the layout you picked. Each key shows its normal Hindi character at the bottom and its Shift character at the top, with the English key name in the corner. The yellow key is the next one to press for the word you are on; when the next character needs Shift, both Shift keys light up too. The hint above the keyboard says the same in words, such as "Next key: Shift + H (भ्)". If a word no longer matches the passage, the hint tells you so, and you can press Backspace or carry on. On a phone you can tap the keys, and on a small screen the keyboard scrolls sideways. Hints are meant for learning; switch them off before a timed mock so that you rely on memory, as you will in the exam.

Tips for Hindi typing tests

  • Learn the matras and half letters first. Most Hindi mistakes are a short ि instead of a long ी, or a full letter where a half letter was needed.
  • Watch the purna viram and spaces. CPCT's instructions warn that an extra space can make the following words count as wrong.
  • Switch off hints before a mock test. The exam screen will not show the next key.
  • Practise 15 to 20 minutes daily and track your net speed in the history table under your result.

Frequently asked questions

Which Hindi keyboard layout should I learn for exams?

Check your exam notice. CPCT allows Inscript or Remington (GAIL) in Unicode, and the SSC CHSL 2026 notice says Hindi typists must use the Mangal font. If you already type Krutidev, Remington GAIL uses almost the same keys, so it is the quickest switch. If you are starting fresh, Inscript is the standard layout built into Windows.

What is the Hindi typing speed for SSC?

The SSC CHSL 2026 notice asks for 30 words a minute in Hindi, which SSC equates to about 9,000 key depressions an hour, in a 10-minute test (15 minutes with a scribe).

What is the difference between Remington GAIL and Krutidev?

Krutidev 010 is an old font where the typed keys are stored as English letters. Remington GAIL gives the same typewriter-style key positions but produces Unicode (Mangal) text. A few keys on the number row are different in GAIL; the on-screen keyboard here shows each layout as published by CPCT.

How is Hindi typing speed counted?

SSC treats 5 key depressions as one word. This test counts every key you pressed that stayed in your text (Backspace and deleted keys are not counted), divides by 5 and by the minutes for gross speed, and subtracts mistakes per minute for net speed. CPCT mode uses CPCT's own net words per minute.

Can I type Hindi here without installing anything?

Yes. Type with your normal English keyboard and the tool turns each key into Hindi in the layout you chose. You do not need to install Mangal, Kruti Dev or a Windows Hindi keyboard.

How do I type ि and half letters in Remington or Krutidev?

Type f before the letter for ि (f + d gives कि). Many half letters have their own key, for example D for क्, and the rest use the halant key. For the reph (र् above a letter), type Z after the letter. The next-key hint shows each step for the word you are on.

Are the passages from real exams?

No. They are written by our team in plain Hindi, at a length similar to exam passages, without numbers or quote marks so that they work in every layout. Your result is a practice estimate, not an official score.
