Remington GAIL: typewriter keys, Unicode text

For decades Hindi typists in offices and courts learnt on the Remington Hindi typewriter and then on computers with the Kruti Dev font, which uses the same key positions. Krutidev has one big problem: what it saves is English letters, not Hindi, so the text breaks as soon as it leaves a computer with that font. The Remington (GAIL) layout keeps the familiar keys but produces Unicode, the Hindi text that works in Mangal, on the web, on phones and in exam software.

That is why CPCT offers it next to Inscript, and why typists moving from Krutidev to Unicode often choose it. This page opens the Hindi typing test with the Remington GAIL layout selected.

The layout used here

The key map follows the "Devnagari Remington Unicode Keyboard Layout" image on the CPCT website. Most letter keys are the same as in Krutidev. The main differences are on the number row:

KeyRemington GAIL (CPCT image)Krutidev 010
1 to 0Hindi digits १ to ०English digits
(त्र;
)ऋद्ध
*द्ध’
+् (halant)़ (nukta)
=ृत्र

A few keys in the image are hard to read. Where it is unclear we kept the Krutidev meaning (for example, Shift + A gives the purna viram ।). The on-screen keyboard always shows what each key produces in this tool.

Typing the tricky parts

  • ि before the letter: type f and then the letter. For a half-letter cluster, type f before the whole cluster: fLFkfr gives स्थिति.
  • Reph after the letter: /keZ gives धर्म, iwoZ gives पूर्व.
  • Half letters: many have their own Shift key, such as D for क्, L for स्, U for न्. Others use the halant key.
  • ऊ: type m then Q.
  • Full letters from half letters: add k, as in Hk for भ and Fk for थ.

Keep Show keyboard and next-key hints on while you learn. The yellow key is the next one to press for the word you are on, worked out from the passage.

Who should choose Remington GAIL

Pick this layout if you already type Krutidev, learnt on a Hindi typewriter, or your exam lists Remington (GAIL) as an option. If you are starting from zero, Inscript is equally accepted by CPCT and its letters follow reading order, so compare both before you commit to one.

Practice plan

  1. Spend the first week in 5-minute Practice tests with hints on, until the common matras and half letters come without thinking.
  2. Move to 10-minute tests and watch your net speed and mistakes in the result.
  3. When preparing for CPCT, switch to CPCT mode for the full 15 minutes with hints off.

If you still have old Krutidev files, convert them with the Krutidev to Unicode converter. For everyday Hindi typing in Remington GAIL, use the Hindi typing tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Remington GAIL keyboard?

It is a Hindi keyboard layout that copies the old Remington Hindi typewriter, the same key positions used by Krutidev typists, but produces Unicode text that shows in Mangal and every other Hindi Unicode font. CPCT lists it as one of its two Hindi layouts.

Is Remington GAIL the same as Krutidev?

The letters are on almost the same keys, so a Krutidev typist can switch quickly. Two differences matter: GAIL saves real Unicode Hindi instead of English letters, and some keys on the number row are different. In the layout published by CPCT, for example, the number keys give Hindi digits and ( gives त्र.

How do I type ि and the reph in Remington GAIL?

Type f first and then the letter for ि, so f + d gives कि. For the reph (र् on top), type the letter and its matra first and then Z, so d k ; Z gives कार्य.

How do I type ऊ in Remington GAIL?

Type m (उ) and then Q. The tool joins them into ऊ, as the GAIL keyboard does.

Can I use Remington GAIL for the SSC Hindi typing test?

The SSC CHSL 2026 notice asks Hindi typists to use the Mangal font and does not name a keyboard layout. Remington GAIL produces Mangal (Unicode) text, so it fits that rule. Follow the instructions given at your exam centre.
