2Converted text

Krutidev text is plain English letters that only look like Hindi when the Kruti Dev 010 font is chosen. This page never downloads that font; if it is installed on your device, the Krutidev box uses it.

Your text and files are converted inside your browser and are never uploaded.

What is Krutidev, and why convert it to Unicode?

Kruti Dev 010 is a Hindi font from the days before Unicode. It does not store Hindi letters at all: it stores ordinary keyboard characters and draws Hindi shapes in their place. The word भारत, for example, is saved as Hkkjr. On a computer that has the Kruti Dev font and a document set to that font, it looks fine. Copy it into an email, a WhatsApp message, Google Docs or an online form, and the reader sees a jumble of English letters and symbols.

Unicode solves this. Unicode Hindi (often called Mangal, after the Windows font that shows it) stores real Devanagari letters from the Unicode Devanagari block. Every modern phone and computer can show it, search engines can read it, and it can be pasted anywhere. That is why offices, typists, DTP operators, teachers and students who still have files in Krutidev convert them, and why some people need the opposite: a Unicode text turned into Krutidev for an old template, a court document or a printing press that still works in Kruti Dev.

How to use the converter

  1. Choose the direction: Krutidev → Unicode or Unicode → Krutidev. If you paste the other kind of text, the tool notices and switches for you.
  2. Paste your text in the left box. In MS Word, press Ctrl + A and Ctrl + C to copy everything. The converted text appears on the right as you type or paste, with line breaks kept.
  3. Press Copy text, or download it as a .txt file or a ready Word file. The Word file uses Mangal for Unicode output and Kruti Dev 010 for Krutidev output.
  4. For a whole document, press Open .docx or .txt. A Word file is converted in place: only the Hindi text changes, and its tables, bold text and page layout stay as they were. Download the converted .docx when the message says it is ready.
  5. Use ⇄ Swap to send the result back the other way, which is a quick way to check a conversion.

What the converter handles

Krutidev typing does not follow the order of Hindi letters, so a simple letter-for-letter swap gives wrong results. This converter follows the way the font is actually typed:

  • The ि matra is typed before its letter in Krutidev (fd for कि) and after it in Unicode. Words with half letters, such as स्थिति (fLFkfr) and क्रिया, move the matra past the whole cluster.
  • The reph (the र् written above a letter, as in कार्य or कीर्ति) is typed with Z after the letter and its matras in Krutidev, and before the letter in Unicode.
  • Half letters and joined letters such as क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र, द्ध, द्य, द्व, ट्ट, क्र, प्र and the round-bottom forms ट्र, ड्र.
  • Nukta letters such as ज़, फ़, ड़ and ढ़, the chandrabindu (ँ), visarga (ः), ॉ as in कॉलेज, Devanagari digits, and punctuation including the purna viram (।).

We wrote the conversion tables ourselves from the font's character layout and test them against a set of known word and sentence pairs, in both directions, before every release.

The Kruti Dev font

This page does not offer the Kruti Dev 010 font for download, because we could not confirm that it is under a free licence. You do not need it for Unicode: Windows, Android, iPhone and Mac all include Hindi Unicode fonts. If Kruti Dev is already installed on your computer, the tool uses it for the Krutidev box so you can read the text as Hindi. Otherwise the Krutidev side shows English letters and symbols. That is normal, and it becomes Hindi again once you paste it into a document and choose Kruti Dev 010 as the font.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Check the source font. Krutidev conversion only works on text typed in Kruti Dev (010 and the related Kruti Dev fonts with the same layout). Text from other legacy fonts, such as Chanakya or Shusha, uses different codes and comes out wrong.
  • Mixed English and Hindi. In a Krutidev document, English words are also just letters, so they are converted too. With a Word file this is not a problem, because the tool converts only the text set in Kruti Dev and leaves English text in other fonts alone. With pasted text, retype the English words afterwards.
  • PDF files. A PDF made from Krutidev text often copies out as Krutidev letters. Copy the text from the PDF and paste it here. If the PDF is a scan, the text must first be read with an OCR tool.
  • Excel. Copy the cells, paste them here, convert, and paste the result back into Excel. Each line stays a separate cell.
  • Exams and online forms expect Unicode. The SSC CHSL 2026 notice, for instance, asks Hindi typists to use the Mangal font only. Practise in Unicode with the Hindi typing test, and type new Hindi text with our Hindi typing tool.

Your text stays private

All conversion happens in your browser. Pasted text and opened files are not uploaded to any server. Only your last pasted text and chosen direction are remembered on your own device, so they are still here if you reload the page. Clear the box to remove them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Krutidev to Unicode?

Copy the Krutidev text from MS Word or Excel (it looks like Hindi there), paste it in the left box here and the Unicode Hindi appears on the right straight away. Press Copy text and paste it wherever you need it, for example in a Mangal-font document, an email or a government portal.

Why does my Krutidev text show as English letters?

Kruti Dev 010 is an old font that draws Hindi shapes on top of English letters. The text itself is letters such as Hkkjr, and it only looks like भारत when the Kruti Dev font is selected. On a device or website without that font you see the letters, which is why Unicode is needed for sharing.

Can I convert a whole Word file from Krutidev to Unicode?

Yes. Use Open .docx and choose your file. The tool changes only the Kruti Dev text, switches it to the Mangal font, and keeps tables, bold text, headings and pages as they were. Download the converted .docx when it is ready. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

How do I convert Unicode (Mangal) Hindi to Krutidev?

Choose Unicode → Krutidev and paste your Hindi. The right box gives Krutidev text. Paste it into MS Word and set the font to Kruti Dev 010, or use Download Word file, which already sets that font for you.

Does this tool include the Kruti Dev 010 font?

No. We could not confirm a free licence for Kruti Dev, so the font is not offered here. If it is already installed on your computer, the Krutidev box uses it automatically. Unicode Hindi needs no extra font, because Windows, Android and iPhone already include Hindi fonts.

Which Hindi font should I use for government exams and forms?

Use a Unicode font. For example, the SSC CHSL 2026 notice says candidates who choose Hindi for the typing test must type in the Mangal font only. Convert old Krutidev material to Unicode before you paste it into online forms.

Why are some letters wrong after conversion?

Usually the source text was typed with a different legacy font (for example Chanakya), or a half letter was typed in an unusual order. Check that the original was really Kruti Dev 010, then fix the few words by hand. Line breaks, numbers and punctuation such as । and , are converted too.
