Type Hindi in three ways, without installing anything
Most people who need to write in Hindi on a computer do not have a Hindi keyboard. This tool gives you three ways to type, all producing Unicode Hindi that you can paste anywhere:
- English letters (phonetic): type the sound of the word in English letters and press Space. namaste becomes नमस्ते, aap kaise hain becomes आप कैसे हैं. Suggestions from a built-in word list help with words that can be spelt more than one way.
- Inscript: the standard Hindi keyboard that comes with Windows and is used in many exams. Each key has a fixed Hindi letter, shown on the on-screen keyboard. Our key map follows the Inscript layout published by CPCT.
- Remington GAIL: the layout of the old Hindi typewriter, which Krutidev typists already know, producing Unicode text. It follows the Remington (GAIL) layout published by CPCT.
It is useful for writing a WhatsApp message to your family, an application to a school principal, a post for your shop, or a letter that has to be in Hindi. Office staff who learnt on a Remington typewriter can type in Unicode without learning a new layout.
How to type in Hindi here
- Choose how you want to type: English letters, Inscript or Remington GAIL.
- Click in the box and start typing. In phonetic mode each word turns into Hindi when you press Space or a punctuation mark. In the keyboard modes each key becomes a Hindi letter straight away.
- Use the suggestions under the box to pick a different spelling, or the last chip to keep the word in English.
- Tap letters in the panel on the right for anything that is hard to type, such as ञ, ॐ or ₹.
- Press Copy text and paste it where you need it, or Download .txt to save it. Convert to Krutidev opens the text in our Krutidev converter.
Phonetic spelling guide
| Type | Get | Example |
|---|---|---|
a, aa | अ, आ / ा | kaam → काम |
i, ee | इ / ि, ई / ी | dil → दिल, deep → दीप |
u, oo | उ / ु, ऊ / ू | phool → फूल |
e, ai, o, au | े, ै, ो, ौ | mera → मेरा, hai → है |
kh, gh, ch, chh, jh | ख, घ, च, छ, झ | ghar → घर |
th, dh, ph, bh | थ, ध, फ, भ | dhanyavaad → धन्यवाद |
sh, ksh, gy | श, क्ष, ज्ञ | shiksha → शिक्षा |
| consonants together | half letter | namaste → नमस्ते |
n or m before a consonant | ं (when the word list has it) | hindi → हिंदी |
. after a Hindi word | । | hai. → है। |
Phonetic typing here is based on rules plus a list of about 1,200 common Hindi words. That is less clever than an online service that has seen millions of sentences, so names and rare words may need a quick fix from the suggestions or the letter panel. In return, nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Inscript or Remington: which one to learn?
If you only need Hindi now and then, phonetic typing is the easiest. If you are preparing for a typing test or will type Hindi every day, learn a real keyboard layout, because it is faster and works the same in every program:
- Inscript is built into Windows, Android and other systems, and letters are typed in reading order (क then ि). It is accepted by exams such as CPCT and is the easiest to start with if you have never typed Hindi.
- Remington GAIL suits people who already type Krutidev, because the keys are almost the same. ि is typed before the letter, and the reph (र्) after it.
When you can type comfortably, measure your speed with the Hindi typing test, which shows the next key on an on-screen keyboard and checks your mistakes as exams do.
Using your Hindi text
The text you type here is standard Unicode, so it behaves like any other text. Paste it into WhatsApp or SMS, a Facebook or Instagram post, an email, Google Docs or MS Word, or the Hindi fields of an online form. In Word, choose a Hindi font such as Mangal, Nirmala UI or Noto Sans Devanagari if you want a particular look; the letters stay the same. Download .txt saves a plain text file that opens in Notepad and on phones. If an office template still uses the old Kruti Dev font, press Convert to Krutidev and paste the converted text into that document instead. To get faster, practise with the Hindi typing test, which uses the same Inscript and Remington keys.
Tips
- On a phone, phonetic mode works with your normal keyboard. Inscript and Remington are meant for a computer keyboard, or you can tap the on-screen keys.
- Your text is saved on this device as you type, so it is still there after a reload. Press Clear to remove it.
- Unicode Hindi shows correctly on all modern phones and computers. You do not need Mangal or any other font to read it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type in Hindi using English letters?
Keep English letters (phonetic) selected, type the word as it sounds and press Space. For example, mera naam becomes मेरा नाम. If the spelling is not right, tap a better option in the suggestions below the box.
Is this the same as Google Input Tools?
No. Google's tools send what you type to Google to get suggestions. This tool works entirely in your browser with its own spelling rules and a built-in word list, so your text is never sent anywhere and it also works offline once the page has loaded.
Which font is the Hindi text in?
It is Unicode Hindi, the kind shown by fonts such as Mangal, Nirmala UI and Noto Sans Devanagari. You can paste it into WhatsApp, Facebook, Word, Google Docs, email and online forms without installing anything. For Kruti Dev documents, use Convert to Krutidev.
How do I type आ, ई and ऊ in phonetic mode?
Double the vowel or use the long form: aa for आ or ा, ee for ई or ी, oo for ऊ or ू, ai for ऐ, au for औ. Type ri after a consonant for ृ, as in krishna. For half letters, just type the consonants together, as in namaste or pyar.
Can I use the Inscript or Remington keyboard here?
Yes. Choose Inscript or Remington GAIL and type with your computer keyboard, or tap the on-screen keys. Remington GAIL follows the old typewriter keys used by Krutidev typists, while Inscript is the Hindi layout built into Windows.
Why is the suggestion wrong for some words?
English spellings of Hindi words vary, and the built-in list covers about 1,200 common words. Names and rare words use the spelling rules, which may need a fix: pick another suggestion, add the letter from the letter panel, or retype with a longer spelling such as bhaarat or deepak.
How do I type a purna viram (।)?
In phonetic mode, type a full stop after a Hindi word and it becomes ।. In Inscript it is Shift + full stop, and in Remington GAIL it is Shift + A. It is also in the letter panel.
