What is a GST tax invoice?
A tax invoice is the bill a GST-registered business issues when it sells taxable goods or services. It records who sold what to whom, the taxable value, the GST rate and the tax charged. Your buyer needs it to claim input tax credit, and you need it for your GST records. The contents are set by Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017, so a "GST bill format" is really a layout that carries those details.
If you are a composition taxpayer, or you only sell exempt goods or services, you issue a bill of supply instead. If goods move without a sale, for example to a job worker, a delivery challan goes with them. All of these can be made here.
How to use this GST invoice generator
- Your details. Enter your business name, address and GSTIN. The first two digits of your GSTIN are your state code, for example
27for Maharashtra. - Customer details. Add the buyer's name and address, or pick a saved customer. For a registered buyer, add their GSTIN so they can claim input tax credit.
- Place of supply. Pick the state where the supply is made. The tool compares it with your state and chooses CGST + SGST or IGST for you.
- Items. For each line, enter a description, the HSN code (goods) or SAC (services), quantity and unit, rate and the GST %. Save items you sell often and pick them by name next time.
- Extras. Add your logo, a signature image, bank details and a UPI QR code so the customer can pay straight from the invoice.
- Download. Check the totals, then download a PDF, an Excel sheet or a Word file. Each download is also kept under "My saved invoices" in this browser, so you can reopen it later.
CGST + SGST or IGST?
The tax type depends on where you are and where the place of supply is:
- Same state (intra-state): the GST rate is split equally into CGST and SGST. In Union Territories without a legislature (Chandigarh, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu), UTGST takes the place of SGST.
- Different states (inter-state): the full rate is charged as IGST. Supplies to an SEZ unit and exports are also treated as inter-state.
For goods, the place of supply is usually where the goods are delivered. For most services to a registered business, it is the buyer's registered location. Some services have special rules.
Worked example
A shop in Nashik, Maharashtra sells goods with a taxable value of ₹10,000 at 18% GST.
| Buyer in | Tax charged | Invoice total |
|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra (intra-state) | CGST 9% = ₹900 and SGST 9% = ₹900 | ₹11,800 |
| Gujarat (inter-state) | IGST 18% = ₹1,800 | ₹11,800 |
The total is the same; only the split of the tax changes.
Prices that already include GST? Tick "My rates include GST" and the tool works the taxable value back: price × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). A ₹1,180 item at 18% becomes ₹1,000 taxable plus ₹180 GST.
What must be on a tax invoice (Rule 46 in brief)
- Your name, address and GSTIN
- An invoice number of up to 16 characters (letters, numbers,
-or/), unique for the financial year - Date of issue
- Buyer's name, address and GSTIN or UIN, if registered
- For an unregistered buyer: name, address, delivery address and state name and code when the taxable value is ₹50,000 or more, or when the buyer asks
- HSN or SAC code, description, and quantity with unit for goods
- Total value, and taxable value after any discount
- Rate and amount of CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST and cess, as applicable
- Place of supply with the state name for inter-state supplies, and the delivery address if it is different
- Whether tax is payable on reverse charge
- Signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised person
HSN digits depend on turnover: up to ₹5 crore in the previous year, 4 digits on B2B invoices (optional on B2C); above ₹5 crore, 6 digits on all invoices.
Copies and delivery challans
Rule 48 asks for a goods invoice in triplicate (ORIGINAL FOR RECIPIENT, DUPLICATE FOR TRANSPORTER, TRIPLICATE FOR SUPPLIER) and a services invoice in duplicate (ORIGINAL FOR RECIPIENT, DUPLICATE FOR SUPPLIER). Choose the set under Copy marking and you get one PDF with a marked page for each copy.
A delivery challan under Rule 55 is used instead of an invoice in a few cases, such as goods sent for job work. Our delivery challan generator explains when.
Current GST rate slabs
As of 14 October 2026, the rates come from the reform recommended at the 56th GST Council meeting and in force since 22 September 2025, with later amendments:
| Rate | Used for |
|---|---|
| 0% (nil or exempt) | Many essentials, such as fresh food, Indian breads and life-saving medicines |
| 5% | Merit rate for many everyday goods and some services |
| 18% | Standard rate for most goods and services |
| 40% | De-merit rate for a select few goods and services, including pan masala, cigarettes and most tobacco products since 1 February 2026 |
| 3% | Gold, silver, platinum and jewellery |
| 0.25% and 1.5% | Rough diamonds and precious stones (0.25%); other diamonds (1.5%) |
The old 12% and 28% slabs no longer apply to almost all items. A few narrow categories still have their own rates, such as 12% on building bricks and roofing tiles. The 57th GST Council meeting on 8 October 2026 made no change to the slabs. Always confirm the rate for your HSN or SAC in the current notifications on the CBIC GST website.
Tips for issuing invoices
- Number invoices in order. Use one or more series, such as
NSK/26-27/001, and start fresh each financial year. Do not skip or reuse numbers. - Issue on time. For goods, issue the invoice before or at the time of removal or delivery. For services, Rule 47 allows 30 days from the supply (45 days for banks, insurers and NBFCs).
- Keep records. Save every PDF. GST records generally have to be kept for 72 months from the due date of the annual return for that year.
- Check the GSTIN. A wrong buyer GSTIN can stop them claiming credit, so verify it on the GST portal.
What this tool does not do
- It does not create an e-invoice. E-invoicing means reporting the invoice to a government Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) to get an IRN and a signed QR code. It is mandatory for B2B invoices of businesses whose turnover crossed ₹5 crore in any year from 2017-18. If it applies to you, use the IRP or your accounting software for B2B invoices.
- It does not file returns, and it is not tax advice. The rate, place of supply and document type are your call, so check with your CA when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions
Is this GST invoice generator free?
Yes. You can make and download as many invoices as you need with no sign-up and no charge. The invoice is built in your browser and the PDF is created on your device. Nothing you type, including your GSTIN, customer details or bank details, is sent to or stored on a server, so save a copy of every PDF yourself.
When should I charge CGST and SGST, and when IGST?
Compare your state with the place of supply. If both are in the same state, the GST rate is split equally into CGST and SGST, for example 9% + 9% for an 18% item. In Union Territories without a legislature, such as Chandigarh or Ladakh, UTGST replaces SGST. If the place of supply is in another state, the full rate is charged as IGST. The tool picks this automatically from the states you select.
How many copies of a GST invoice do I need?
Rule 48 of the CGST Rules asks for a goods invoice in triplicate, marked ORIGINAL FOR RECIPIENT, DUPLICATE FOR TRANSPORTER and TRIPLICATE FOR SUPPLIER, and a services invoice in duplicate, marked ORIGINAL FOR RECIPIENT and DUPLICATE FOR SUPPLIER. Pick the set under Copy marking and the PDF has one marked page per copy. This rule does not apply to e-invoices.
Does this tool generate an e-invoice or IRN?
No. It makes a normal GST tax invoice PDF. An e-invoice needs the invoice to be reported to a government Invoice Registration Portal, which returns an IRN and a signed QR code. E-invoicing is mandatory for B2B invoices of businesses whose turnover crossed ₹5 crore in any year from 2017-18. If that applies to you, use the IRP or your accounting software for those invoices.
What are the current GST rates?
As of October 2026, the main rates are 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate for a select few goods and services such as pan masala, cigarettes and most tobacco products. Gold, silver and jewellery are at 3%, rough diamonds and precious stones at 0.25%, and other diamonds at 1.5%. Many essentials are nil-rated or exempt. Confirm the rate for your HSN or SAC in the latest CBIC notifications.
Can I download the GST invoice in Excel or Word format?
Yes. Excel (.xlsx) gives you the invoice as a sheet with working formulas for the taxable value, GST and total, so you can change a quantity and the totals follow. Word (.docx) gives the same invoice as an editable table. Both open in Excel, Word, LibreOffice and Google Sheets or Docs. The logo, signature and UPI QR are in the PDF only.
Is a handwritten GST bill valid?
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists what a tax invoice must contain; it does not say the invoice has to be printed by a computer. What matters is that every required detail is there and the numbering is in order. The exception is e-invoicing: if it applies to you, Rule 48(5) says a B2B invoice issued any other way is not treated as an invoice.
What is the time limit to issue a tax invoice?
For goods, section 31 of the CGST Act says the invoice is issued before or at the time of removal, when the supply involves moving the goods, or at delivery in other cases. For services, Rule 47 allows 30 days from the date of supply, or 45 days for insurers, banking companies and financial institutions, including NBFCs.
