Prompts for the AI photo trends people search for
Every few months a new AI photo look spreads through Instagram reels and WhatsApp statuses: a grainy vintage saree portrait, a tiny figurine of yourself on a desk, a photo that looks as if it was taken in the 1980s. The original prompts are passed around as screenshots and often name brands or real people, or ask for things you may not want.
This page collects safe, rewritten prompts for those trends. Each card has a sample image made with a fictional model and a full prompt you can paste into ChatGPT or Gemini with your own photo.
A short timeline of the trends
| Trend | When it peaked | Our prompt |
| Hand-painted anime look (ChatGPT) | Late March to early April 2025 | Anime film scene |
| 3D figurine on a desk (Gemini) | Early September 2025 | 3D figurine on a desk |
| Vintage saree and retro portraits (Gemini) | Mid-September 2025 | Vintage saree portrait, 1960s studio photo |
| Hugging your younger self (Gemini) | Mid-September 2025 | Meet your younger self |
| The 1980s photo (ChatGPT, then Gemini) | Early September 2026 | 1980s photo, 1990s snapshot, 90s yearbook photo |
The peak times come from our own look at Google Trends for India, and from news coverage such as TechCrunch on India and the Gemini retro and saree looks, Decrypt on the figurine trend and The Creators Index on the 1980s photo prompt. Most of these trends rise and fade within a week or two, but people keep searching for the saree look in particular long after.
What we changed from the viral versions
- No studio or brand names. The anime trend was named after a famous animation studio, and the figurine prompt that went viral named toy brands, packaging styles and 3D software. Our prompts describe the look in plain words instead: "a hand-painted Japanese animation film look", "a plain cardboard box with no brand, logo or text".
- No celebrities. One version of the instant-photo trend put users next to film stars. We left that out: a fake photo with a real person can mislead people and misuse that person's likeness. Our instant-photo prompt is for you and a friend who has agreed.
- No children's photos. The "hug your younger self" trend often used childhood photos. Our version uses two photos of you as an adult, taken a few years apart.
- Dignified saree looks. The vintage saree prompt keeps the grainy, golden-lit 1990s mood without the revealing styling some copies drifted into.
- No real actors or film titles in the retro prompts. The hand-painted film poster leaves all lettering out, so you can add your own name later if you want.
How to get the retro look right
The 1980s and 1990s prompts work by describing the camera and the print rather than just the decade:
- The flash: direct on-camera flash gives the flat, bright faces of old family photos.
- The film: grain, slightly faded colours and a warm cast make it look like a scanned print.
- The clothes and hair: name a few period details, such as shoulder pads, big curls, a denim jacket or a scrunchie. Too many details turn it into a costume.
- The backdrop: a mottled studio backdrop or a painted hill scene places it in an old photo studio.
If the result looks too clean and modern, reply with "make it look like a faded print from an old photo album, with more grain and softer focus".
Why trend images can look different from the reels
The images in viral reels are usually the pick of many tries, sometimes edited afterwards. AI apps also update their image models, so a prompt that gave one look last year may give another today. Expect to regenerate a few times. AI tools try to keep your face but cannot promise it; a clear, front-facing photo in good light gives the closest likeness.
Stay safe with trend prompts
When the saree trend went viral, news reports such as The Tribune's warned people to think before uploading personal photos. A few simple rules:
- Use the official ChatGPT or Gemini apps or websites, not unknown apps or bots promising the same trend.
- Do not upload photos that show ID cards, your home address or other personal details.
- Only use photos of other people with their permission.
- Read the AI app's privacy settings, since your photo is handled under its terms, not ours. Your photo never comes to MuftTools.in.
