What is a WhatsApp click-to-chat link?
A click-to-chat link opens a WhatsApp chat with your number in one tap. The customer does not need to save your number first. They tap the link or scan the QR code, WhatsApp opens, and your chat is ready.
WhatsApp explains this feature in its Help Center article on click to chat. The link uses this format:
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hello
The number is written in full international format: country code first (91 for India), then the mobile number, with no plus sign, spaces, brackets, dashes or leading zero. The part after ?text= is an optional message that appears already typed in the chat box. The customer can edit it before pressing send.
This tool builds that link for you, so you don't have to remove spaces or encode the message by hand.
How to use this tool
- Pick your country code. It is set to +91 India by default. Change it if your WhatsApp number is from another country.
- Enter your WhatsApp number. Type the 10-digit mobile number that has WhatsApp on it. You can use a regular WhatsApp number or a WhatsApp Business number.
- Add a pre-filled message (optional). Type the first message you want customers to send you. The live preview shows how it will look in the chat.
- Copy or test the link. Use the copy button to paste the link anywhere. Use the open button to check that it opens the right chat.
- Style your QR code. Choose a dot style (square, rounded, dots or classy), a solid colour or a gradient, and either a chat icon in the middle or your own logo.
- Make a poster. Pick a colour theme and add your business name and number. The poster shows a line like "Scan to chat on WhatsApp" with your QR code.
- Download or print. Choose Download PDF for real print sizes on A4 paper (an A4 poster, A5, A6 stand inserts, 75 mm stickers or QR stickers), or save a PNG, or the bare QR as an SVG for a print shop.
- Add a chat button to your website (optional). Step 3 makes a ready HTML link button with a simple chat-bubble icon. Pick the text, colour and position, copy the code and paste it into your site.
Where to use your link and QR code
Put the link anywhere a customer might want to ask you something. A few common places:
- Your website: paste the button code from step 3. It is a plain link with inline styles, so it works on most sites, including a "Custom HTML" block in WordPress, without any plugin or script.
- Instagram bio: paste the link in your profile so followers can message you directly.
- Google Business Profile: Google's help page on messaging options says verified profiles can add a WhatsApp click-to-chat link under Edit profile, Contact, Chat, where the option is available in your region. You can also use the link in your posts.
- Visiting cards: print a small QR code on the back of the card.
- Shop counter: keep a printed poster near the billing counter. A kirana store can take repeat orders this way.
- Delivery bags and boxes: a sticker with the QR helps customers reorder from a sweet shop, bakery or tiffin service.
Tips for a good pre-filled message
The pre-filled message is the first thing the customer sends you. A clear one saves time for both of you, because you know straight away what they want.
- Keep it short. One or two lines is enough. Long messages look like spam.
- Write it as the customer. Use "I want to..." or "Please send...", not "Welcome to our shop".
- Say where it came from. Mention the poster, website or Instagram so you know which channel works.
- Leave a gap to fill in. Ask for the detail you need, such as a date, area or item.
Some example messages for Indian businesses:
- Kirana store: "Hi, I want to place a home delivery order. My list is:"
- Salon: "Hello, I would like to book an appointment for a haircut. Preferred day and time:"
- Tuition teacher: "Namaste, I want to know about tuition for Class 9 Maths. Batch timings and fees please."
Messages in Hindi and other Indian languages
The pre-filled message can be in any language. Tap one of the हिंदी or Hinglish examples, or type your own in Devanagari, Tamil, Bengali or any other script. The tool encodes it the way the wa.me link expects, so it arrives exactly as typed. Hinglish ("Price list aur timing bata dijiye") is often the most natural choice for local customers, while Devanagari reads well for older customers who type in Hindi.
Test a Hindi link once on your phone before printing it. Non-English letters make the link longer, which makes the QR a little denser, so keep such messages short and print the QR a little larger.
QR code printing tips
A QR code that doesn't scan is worse than no QR code. Follow these simple checks before you print hundreds of copies.
- Size: on a visiting card, keep the QR at least 2 cm wide. On a counter poster or wall, go bigger so people can scan from a step or two away.
- Contrast: use dark dots on a light background. Light dots on a dark background, or two similar colours, are harder for phone cameras to read.
- Gradients and logos: keep gradients dark from end to end, and keep the centre logo small and simple.
- Quiet space: leave a clear margin around the QR. Don't let text or borders touch it.
- Paper and finish: very shiny lamination can reflect light. Matte paper usually scans more easily.
- Test before printing: scan the QR from the screen with two or three different phones, including an older one. Check that it opens your chat with the right message. Then print one test copy and scan that too.
The QR code holds your wa.me link directly. It keeps working as long as your number is on WhatsApp. If you change your number, make a new QR code.
Privacy: nothing leaves your device
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your number, message, logo and poster details are not uploaded to any server. There is no sign-up and no account, and the tool is free to use.
Keep in mind that anyone who gets your link or scans your QR code can see your number and message you. Only share it where you are happy to receive messages.

Frequently asked questions
Does the customer need to save my number to message me?
No. That is the main benefit of a click-to-chat link. When someone taps the link or scans the QR code, WhatsApp opens a chat with your number straight away, even if it is not saved in their contacts. They can save your number later if they want to.
Does it work with WhatsApp Business?
Yes. The wa.me link works the same way for a regular WhatsApp number and a WhatsApp Business app number. Just enter the number that has WhatsApp Business installed. Customers will see your business profile name in the chat, just as they would if they had messaged you normally.
Can I change the pre-filled message later?
The message is part of the link itself, so changing it means making a new link and a new QR code. Links and QR codes you have already shared or printed will keep the old message. If you plan to change it often, keep the message simple, or print a QR without a message.
Does the QR code expire?
No. The QR code simply holds your wa.me link, and it does not depend on our website to work. It keeps working as long as your number is active on WhatsApp. If you change your WhatsApp number, you will need to make a new link and print a new QR code.
Is my number or logo uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens on your own device inside the browser. Your phone number, message, logo and poster details are not sent to any server. Once you close the page, nothing is stored by us. Remember that anyone who gets your link or scans your QR can see your number.
How should I type my number, with 0 or +91?
Pick +91 India from the country code list and type only your 10-digit mobile number, without a 0 in front, spaces or dashes. The tool joins them into the full international format that WhatsApp expects, such as 919876543210. Tap the open button to check the link before you share it.
How do I message someone on WhatsApp without saving their number?
Type their number here and tap Test link, or use the quick page for this, WhatsApp without saving number. WhatsApp opens a chat with that number straight away, and nothing is added to your phone's contacts. It works only if that number uses WhatsApp.
Can I make a link for a WhatsApp group?
No. A wa.me link opens a chat with one phone number. A group has its own invite link, which a group admin can copy from the group's settings in WhatsApp. You can still turn that invite link into a QR code with the general QR code generator on this site.
How do I add a WhatsApp chat button to my website?
Fill in your number, then use step 3, Chat button for your website. Pick the button text, colour and position, copy the code and paste it into your page's HTML or a Custom HTML block. It is a plain link with a simple chat icon, with no script, plugin or brand logo.
