About the CPCT typing section
CPCT, the Computer Proficiency Certification Test run by MPSEDC in Madhya Pradesh, has a multiple-choice section followed by an English typing test and a Hindi typing test. Many Madhya Pradesh government departments ask for a CPCT score for clerical and data entry posts, so the typing part matters. This page opens the Hindi typing test in CPCT mode. For the English part, use the typing test and choose CPCT.
According to MPSEDC's exam schedule, each typing test lasts 15 minutes (20 minutes for differently abled candidates) and comes after a short mock round. The tool above uses the same time.
How CPCT scores typing
MPSEDC publishes its typing assessment formula. CPCT uses the "unrestricted" method: you can type wrong words and also go back to correct them.
- Your text is split into words at each space, and each word is checked against the passage.
- Gross words per minute = (correct + incorrect words) ÷ time taken in minutes.
- Net words per minute (NWPM) = correct words ÷ time taken in minutes. Only NWPM appears on the score card as your typing speed.
- Accuracy = NWPM × 100 ÷ GWPM.
- The keystroke count leaves out the Backspace key and the characters you erased.
This is different from SSC, which grades full and half mistakes. Under CPCT's word-by-word check, a missing or extra word shifts everything after it. The Hindi typing instructions warn that an extra space between two words makes all the words typed after it count as wrong. CPCT mode here compares words in exactly that order, so you can see the effect for yourself.
Inscript or Remington (GAIL)?
CPCT's Hindi test is typed in Unicode, with the layout you chose in your application: IN-Script or Remington (GAIL). The instructions ask you to check the layout on your admit card and set the language input during the mock round. Both are available above, with an on-screen keyboard based on the layout images on the CPCT website that highlights the next key.
- Inscript: letters in reading order, matras after the letter. A good choice if you are new to Hindi typing.
- Remington (GAIL): the typewriter layout. If you already type Krutidev, the keys are nearly the same, apart from a few on the number row.
Practice routine for CPCT
- Start in Practice mode with hints on until you can type every letter of the passage without looking down.
- Switch to CPCT mode and take the full 15 minutes. Read your NWPM and the words marked wrong.
- Fix the habit behind the most common error, such as double spaces, a missing ं or the wrong half letter.
- Turn hints off for your weekly mock, because the exam screen will not show them.
The required NWPM depends on the post, so check the notice of the department you are applying to. Results here are practice estimates on our own passages, not CPCT scores.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the CPCT typing test?
MPSEDC's CPCT schedule gives 15 minutes for the English typing test and 15 minutes for the Hindi typing test (20 minutes each for differently abled candidates), each after a short mock round.
How does CPCT calculate typing speed?
CPCT's assessment formula splits your typed text at spaces and checks each word against the passage. Gross words per minute = all words typed ÷ minutes, net words per minute (NWPM) = correct words ÷ minutes, and accuracy = NWPM × 100 ÷ GWPM. Only NWPM appears on the score card.
Which Hindi layouts are allowed in CPCT?
CPCT's Hindi typing instructions mention IN-Script and Remington (GAIL), in Unicode. You choose the layout in your application and should check it on your admit card. Krutidev is not offered.
Is Backspace allowed in CPCT?
Yes. CPCT uses what it calls the unrestricted method, so you can delete and correct text while typing, and the characters you erase are not counted in your keystroke count.
What NWPM do I need in CPCT?
The speed needed depends on the post you apply for, so check the recruitment rules of that department. Your CPCT score card shows your net words per minute for English and Hindi.
