Earphone, headset and Bluetooth mic tipsईयरफ़ोन, हेडसेट और ब्लूटूथ माइक के टिप्स
  • Wired earphones with a mic need a 4-ring (TRRS) plug. On a laptop, use the combined headphone-mic jack; a separate pink mic jack needs a splitter.
  • Bluetooth earbuds switch to a lower-quality "headset" mode while the mic is on. That is normal, so the voice sounds thinner.
  • If the level does not move, pick the headset in the Microphone list above. Phones usually switch on their own when you plug in.
  • Check the mute button on the earphone cable or headset before you test.
Echo and background noise tipsइको और शोर कम करने के टिप्स
  • Echo usually comes from your speakers reaching the mic. Use earphones, or lower the speaker volume.
  • Keep the mic a hand's width from your mouth and speak across it, not straight into it.
  • Fans, coolers and traffic raise the Background number. Close windows or move away from the fan.
  • If the clip sounds muffled, clean the mic hole gently with a soft dry brush and remove a thick case.

What this mic test does

Before an online class, a job interview on Google Meet, a WhatsApp video call or a gaming session, you want to know one thing: can people hear me? This page answers that in a few seconds. It listens to your microphone through the browser, shows a live sound level and waveform, tells you in plain words whether the mic is working, too quiet or too loud, and lets you record a short clip so you can hear yourself the way others will.

It works for the built-in mic of a phone or laptop, wired earphones with an inline mic, USB and gaming headsets, webcams with a mic and Bluetooth earbuds. Everything happens inside your browser. The sound is not sent to us or anyone else, and the test clip disappears when you close the page.

How to test your microphone

  1. Tap Start mic test. Your browser shows a permission box; choose Allow. Nothing is asked before you tap.
  2. Say something in your normal voice, for example "Hello, one two three". The bars and the meter should move, and the message turns green when we hear you clearly.
  3. If you use earphones or a headset, pick it in the Microphone list. The list shows proper names only after you allow the mic.
  4. Choose 5 or 10 seconds and tap Record. Speak until the timer ends, then play the clip back.
  5. Listen for echo, hiss, a muffled sound or words cutting out. Use the tips below to fix them, and test again.

Reading the results

The meter runs from silence on the left to the loudest sound a mic can record on the right. Normal speech at arm's length usually keeps it in the green part with short jumps when you speak louder. The three numbers under it help you judge the mic:

ReadingWhat it tells youWhat to do
Green: "Your mic is working"We heard clear sound above the backgroundRecord a clip to check the quality
Orange: "Very quiet"Only a faint signal reaches the browserSpeak closer, check the mute switch, raise the input volume or pick another mic
Red: "No sound at all"The browser gets pure silenceThe mic is muted, blocked in settings, or the wrong device is selected
Red bars: "Too loud"The sound is clipping, which makes it crackleMove the mic back a little or lower the input volume

Levels are shown in dB below the loudest possible sound (0 dB), so they are negative numbers. They are a guide, not a lab measurement: every mic, phone and gain setting gives slightly different numbers.

Testing earphone, headset and Bluetooth mics

Most "mic not working" complaints with earphones come from the plug or the selected device rather than a broken mic.

  • Wired earphones: a plug with three black rings (four metal sections, called TRRS) carries the mic. Laptops with one combined headphone jack accept it directly. A desktop with separate green and pink jacks needs a small splitter, with the pink side going into the mic jack.
  • USB-C earphones: they need a phone or laptop whose USB-C port supports audio. If the earphones play music but the bars do not move, check the Microphone list for a USB entry.
  • Bluetooth earbuds: when the mic is in use, the earbuds switch to a call mode that sounds thinner than music. That is normal. On a laptop, choose the entry with "Hands-Free" or "Headset" in its name if there are two.
  • Inline mute buttons: many headsets have a slider on the cable or a button on the ear cup. Check it before anything else.

A quick trick: start the test, then gently tap the mic you think is in use. If the bars jump, that is the mic the browser hears.

If the browser cannot use your mic

You will see a red message on the left explaining the exact problem. The common ones are:

  • Permission blocked: tap the lock or settings icon beside the web address, set Microphone to Allow and reload. On iPhone and iPad, also check Settings › Safari (or Chrome) › Microphone.
  • Blocked by Windows or macOS: on Windows 10 and 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone and turn on microphone access, including access for desktop apps. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and switch on your browser.
  • Mic busy: another app such as a call, Zoom, Teams or a screen recorder may be holding it. Close those apps and tap Start again.
  • No microphone found: desktop PCs often have no mic at all. Plug in a headset or a webcam with a mic.
  • Opened inside an app: links opened inside social media apps often use a built-in browser that blocks the mic. Open the page in Chrome or Safari instead.

Browsers only allow the microphone on secure pages that start with https://. That protects you from sites listening in without your knowledge.

Tips for clearer sound on calls

  • Echo: it happens when your speaker's sound returns into the mic. Earphones fix it almost every time.
  • Background noise: fans, coolers and traffic raise the Background number. Sit away from the fan, close the window, or use a headset mic that sits close to your mouth.
  • Distance: keep a laptop or phone mic about a hand's width to an arm's length away, and speak across it rather than blowing into it.
  • Muffled sound: a thick case, a sticker or dust can cover the tiny mic hole. Clean it gently with a soft, dry brush. Never push a pin into it.
  • Raw sound: browsers clean up voice with echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic volume. Turn on Raw sound to hear what the mic itself picks up, which helps when you compare two mics.

If the level stays silent with every setting, the mic hole is clean and other apps also cannot hear you, the mic itself may be faulty. A phone service centre can test the hardware.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my mic online?

Tap Start mic test and allow the microphone when your browser asks. Speak normally: if the bars move and the message turns green, the mic works. Then record a 5 or 10 second clip and play it back to hear how you actually sound.

Is my recording uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. The sound is processed by your browser on your own device. The test clip is kept in the open tab only and is deleted when you close or reload the page, unless you choose Save recording yourself.

Why does it say microphone permission is blocked?

Your browser was told earlier not to let this site use the mic. Tap the lock or settings icon next to the web address, set Microphone to Allow and reload. On an iPhone, also check Settings › Safari › Microphone.

Why are the bars not moving when I speak?

The wrong input may be selected, the mic may be muted with a switch on the cable or headset, or another app may be holding it. Choose a different entry in the Microphone list, close call apps such as Zoom or WhatsApp, and try again.

How do I test my earphone or headset mic?

Plug in the earphones or connect the Bluetooth headset first, then start the test and pick the headset in the Microphone list. Speak and watch the level. Tap the mic on the cable lightly: if the bars jump, that mic is the one being used.

How can I hear myself while testing?

Turn on Hear yourself live. Use earphones when you do, because if the sound comes out of the speaker it goes back into the mic and makes a loud squeal.

What does the Background number mean?

It is the quietest level we heard over the last few seconds, which is roughly the noise in your room. A number around −60 dB or lower is quiet. Fans, coolers and traffic push it up. The numbers are a rough guide because each mic and gain setting is different.

Mobile ka mic kaise check kare?

Is page ko Chrome (Android) ya Safari (iPhone) mein kholiye, Start mic test dabaiye aur Allow kariye. Bolne par bars hilein aur message green ho jaye to mic theek hai. Phir 5 second record karke play kariye. Hindi mein poora tarika hamare mic test Hindi page par hai.
