Quick answer

Hindi varnamala tracing means writing each letter over a faint guide until the shape feels natural. On this free page a child traces स्वर, व्यंजन and बारहखड़ी on screen, taps Check to get up to three stars for how much of the letter they covered, and hears the letter in Hindi. Parents and teachers can print dotted A4 worksheets. Progress stays in your browser.

Hindi letter tracing on a phone, tablet or computer

Most children learn to write Hindi the same way: they see a letter, say it, and trace it again and again until their hand remembers the shape. This page turns that routine into a short game. Your child picks a letter, traces it over a large grey guide with a finger, stylus or mouse, hears it read aloud and taps Check to earn up to three stars. The stars stay on the letter grid, so they can see which letters are done and which still need practice.

When it is time for pencil and paper, the same page prints dotted tracing worksheets on A4 for any set of letters. There is no sign-up.

How to use it

  1. Pick a group. स्वर (vowels), व्यंजन (consonants) or बारहखड़ी (a consonant with each मात्रा).
  2. Tap a letter. The picture word appears above the board, for example "अ से अनार" or "क से कबूतर". Tap Listen to hear it.
  3. Tap Start tracing. The grey letter appears with a dotted outline. Your child draws over it. Clear wipes the board for another try.
  4. Tap Check. The tool gives 0 to 3 stars and a short, kind message. Next letter moves on.
  5. Print a worksheet for the letters you practised, so the same shapes go onto paper with a pencil.

The letters in the tool

The letter list follows the standard Hindi alphabet (मानक हिंदी वर्णमाला) published by the Central Hindi Directorate under the Ministry of Education, in its revised 2024 edition of Devanagari Lipi tatha Hindi Vartani ka Manakikaran.

GroupLettersCount
स्वरअ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ11
अनुस्वार and विसर्गअं अः2
Basic व्यंजनक to ह33
Joined व्यंजनक्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र4
उत्क्षिप्त व्यंजनड़ ढ़2

Schools usually teach अं and अः with the vowels, which is why many charts say there are 13 स्वर. The tool does the same and puts them at the end of the स्वर tab. The standard also lists ळ as a special letter used in names and some languages. Most Hindi primers leave it out, and so does this tool.

The picture words are the ones found on most school varnamala charts, such as आ से आम, ख से खरगोश and ह से हाथी. A few letters rarely start a Hindi word. For ण, ड़ and ढ़ the tool shows a word with the letter at the end or in the middle (बाण, पहाड़, सीढ़ी). For ङ, ञ and अः it shows the letter on its own.

How the stars work

When your child taps Check, the tool compares the tracing with the grey letter. It looks at two things: how much of the letter was covered, and how much of the colour stayed on the letter rather than around it. Neat tracing that covers almost the whole letter earns three stars. A good attempt that misses some parts earns one or two. Scribbling over the whole board earns none, so the stars mean something.

The board keeps the best stars for each letter. A lower score on a later try never takes stars away. Each check ends with a short, kind message and one thing to try next time.

Below the tool, the progress box shows a daily streak, minutes practised today, a small chart of recent scores and badges. Each letter counts once a day, so tracing the same letter ten times does not inflate the numbers. You can reset everything with one button.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Keep sessions short. Three to five letters at a sitting works better than the whole alphabet. Come back the next day and the streak grows.
  • Say it while tracing. Tap Listen, then ask your child to say the letter and the picture word aloud while they trace. Sound and shape learnt together stick better.
  • Draw the top line last. The Central Hindi Directorate's writing guide (section 2.5 of the same booklet) builds most letters body first and adds the शिरोरेखा at the end. Many teachers teach it that way too.
  • Go from screen to paper. Finger tracing builds the shape in memory, but children also need to hold a pencil. After a few letters on screen, print a worksheet with those letters.
  • Use the "needs practice" sheet. The worksheet option "Letters with fewer than 3 stars" prints only the letters your child found hard.
  • Look-alike pairs. घ and ध, भ and म, ब and व, and ड and ङ are easily mixed up. Trace the two letters one after the other and talk about the difference.

बारहखड़ी (matras) practice

Once the स्वर and व्यंजन are familiar, children learn how the vowel signs (मात्राएँ) join a consonant: क, का, कि, की, कु, कू, के, कै, को, कौ, कं, कः. Choose the बारहखड़ी tab and a consonant from the list to trace all twelve forms. The line above the board shows how each form is made, for example क + ि = कि. Watch for letters whose shape changes, such as र with ु and ू (रु, रू), which children often write wrongly at first.

Printable worksheets

The worksheet section prints on A4 paper. Choose all स्वर, all व्यंजन, the बारहखड़ी of the chosen consonant, the letters with fewer than three stars, or type your own list, such as क ख ग घ or का कि की. Each letter gets:

  • the picture word, if you keep it switched on;
  • a row that starts with one solid letter to copy, followed by dotted letters to trace;
  • more dotted rows if you choose them;
  • blank boxes with a top line and a base line for writing without help.

There are lines for name, class and date at the top, so the sheets work for homework and class activities. To keep a PDF, choose "Save as PDF" in the print window.

Sound, devices and privacy

Listen uses the Hindi voice built into your device or browser. Most Android phones and Chrome have one. Some computers do not, and then the tool shows a message instead of playing a wrong sound. Tracing and stars work without sound.

The tracing board works with touch, a stylus or a mouse. It does not scroll the page while your child draws, so small hands can trace freely. Everything happens in the browser: tracings are not saved or sent, and the stars and progress stay in this browser's storage until you reset them.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters are there in the Hindi varnamala?

The Central Hindi Directorate's standard list has 11 स्वर (अ to औ), with अं and अः shown next to them as anusvar and visarg. It has 33 basic व्यंजन (क to ह), 4 joined letters (क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र), the two letters ड़ and ढ़, and ळ, which makes 40 व्यंजन in all. Most schools teach अं and अः with the स्वर, so children often learn 13 स्वर.

Are अं and अः vowels?

Strictly, no. अं is the anusvar and अः is the visarg, and the Central Hindi Directorate lists them separately after the 11 स्वर. Because they are written with अ and said like vowel sounds, most school books and charts teach them at the end of the स्वर, and this tool does the same.

How does the tool give stars?

When your child taps Check, the tool compares the tracing with the grey letter. It counts how much of the letter was covered and how much of the colour stayed on it. Covering most of the letter neatly gives three stars, a good try gives one or two, and drawing far outside the letter gives none. The best stars for each letter are kept.

Can I print Hindi tracing worksheets?

Yes. Choose all स्वर, all व्यंजन, the बारहखड़ी of one consonant, the letters that still need practice, or type your own letters. Pick the number of dotted and blank rows and tap Print worksheet. Each letter starts with one solid letter to copy. Choose Save as PDF in the print window to keep a file.

What is बारहखड़ी?

बारहखड़ी is the set of twelve forms of a consonant with the vowel signs (मात्राएँ): क, का, कि, की, कु, कू, के, कै, को, कौ, कं, कः. Children usually learn it after the स्वर and व्यंजन. In the tool, pick बारहखड़ी, choose a consonant and trace each form.

Why can't I hear the letter?

The Listen button uses your device's own Hindi voice. Most Android phones and Chrome have one. If you see a message that no Hindi voice was found, add Hindi in your phone's text-to-speech settings, or try Chrome. The tracing and stars work without sound.
