Why time a Navodaya mock test properly

Most children who prepare for the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) know the topics. What trips them up on the day is time: 80 questions in two hours, a reading passage that takes longer than expected, and no chance to change a darkened bubble. A practice paper done at home with a loose eye on the wall clock does not build that sense of pace. This timer recreates the exam hall: the official total time, the section split that NVS suggests, a bell every 30 minutes, a sound when it is time to move on, and a clear "time is up" at the end. It also covers the Navodaya Class 9 lateral entry test and the Sainik School entrance exam (AISSEE) for Class 6 and Class 9.

The timer runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there is no sign-up, and it keeps the phone screen on while it runs where the browser allows it.

How to use it

  1. Pick the exam pattern. JNVST Class 6 is selected first.
  2. Choose the options: extra time for Divyang candidates, sounds, the 30-minute bell, and whether the timer should move to the next section by itself.
  3. Give the child a printed practice paper and a JNVST-style OMR sheet, or switch on the on-screen OMR to mark answers on the phone or computer.
  4. Press Start. Use Next section if the child finishes a section early; the saved minutes carry over to the rest of the paper.
  5. When the time is up, type the answer key of your practice paper into the on-screen sheet and press Check score for marks by section.

JNVST Class 6 pattern (2027)

The NVS prospectus for JNVST 2027 sets one two-hour paper, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, with a single test booklet for all sections:

SectionQuestionsMarksTime
Mental Ability Test and Environmental Studies (EVS)20 + 2025 + 2560 minutes
Arithmetic Test202530 minutes
Language Test202530 minutes
Total801002 hours

Each right answer earns 1.25 marks and there is no negative marking. In the 2027 pattern, questions 21 to 40 come from Environmental Studies, with 15 multiple-choice questions and one passage followed by five questions. The Language test has four passages with five questions each. Divyang candidates get 40 extra minutes. To qualify, a child needs at least 14 marks in Mental Ability and EVS, 7 in Arithmetic and 7 in Language. The prospectus also says there will be a bell after every 30 minutes, and candidates must be seated by 11:00 am.

Navodaya Class 9 and Sainik School patterns

The Class 9 lateral entry prospectus for 2027-28 sets 100 questions for 100 marks in 2½ hours without a break: English 15, Hindi 15, Mathematics 35 and General Science 35, at Class 8 level, with 50 extra minutes for Divyang candidates. The test is on 10 April 2027. It gives no section times, so the timer suggests a split by question count and keeps five minutes at the end for checking the sheet.

The AISSEE 2026 bulletin, the latest one published when we checked, sets these patterns. Both are pen-and-paper OMR tests with no negative marking:

ExamSections (questions × marks each)TotalTime
AISSEE Class 6Language 25 × 2, Mathematics 50 × 3, Intelligence 25 × 2, General Knowledge 25 × 2125 questions, 300 marks150 minutes
AISSEE Class 9Mathematics 50 × 4, Intelligence, English, General Science and Social Science 25 × 2 each150 questions, 400 marks180 minutes

Mathematics carries the most marks in both, so the suggested split gives it the most time. The bulletin asks for 25% in each subject and 40% overall to qualify, and the score check shows both.

Tips for a useful mock test

  • Sit at the real time of day. JNVST Class 6 runs from 11:30 am. Practising at that hour on a few Saturdays helps the child settle into the routine.
  • Use a ballpoint pen. The prospectus allows only a blue or black ballpoint pen on the OMR sheet. Pencil is not allowed, and a darkened circle cannot be changed, struck out or whitened.
  • Do not let one section eat the paper. If the Mental Ability questions are taking too long, move on when the section sound plays, and come back at the end if time is left.
  • Check the sheet number. The OMR sheet and the question booklet must have the same number. Make writing it a habit in every mock test.
  • Review the wrong answers, not just the score. The score table shows right, wrong and blank answers by section, so you can see where the time went.

About the practice set

The 15-question practice set has five EVS questions, five Arithmetic questions and a short Language passage with five questions. Our team wrote them for timing practice. They are not taken from any NVS paper, and they do not include Mental Ability, which is based on figures. For the real question styles, read the sample questions in the prospectus and the previous year question booklet on the NVS admission portal.

Before the exam, check the age rules with the Navodaya and Sainik School age checker. This tool is not run by or linked to Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, NTA or the Sainik Schools Society.

Frequently asked questions

How much time is given for each section in JNVST Class 6?

The 2027 prospectus gives 60 minutes for Mental Ability and EVS together (40 questions), 30 minutes for Arithmetic (20 questions) and 30 minutes for Language (20 questions), 2 hours in all without a break. Students may adjust the time between sections, but the prospectus advises not to spend more than the suggested time on any one section.

Is there negative marking in the Navodaya exam?

No. The JNVST 2027 prospectus gives 1.25 marks for each right answer and says no negative marking will be done. The AISSEE 2026 bulletin also has no negative marking.

What are the qualifying marks in JNVST?

The 2027 prospectus asks for at least 14 marks in Mental Ability and EVS, 7 in Arithmetic and 7 in Language. These are minimums; selection is on merit within your district, so aim much higher in practice.

Why does the timer ring a bell every 30 minutes?

The JNVST prospectus says there will be a bell after every 30 minutes in the exam. Practising with the same bells helps a child judge time without looking at a clock all the time.

Is extra time given to Divyang children?

Yes. The JNVST 2027 prospectus allows 40 extra minutes for Class 6, and the Class 9 prospectus allows 50 extra minutes. Turn on the extra-time option before you start and the section times stretch to match.

Are the practice questions from a real Navodaya paper?

No. The 15-question practice set was written by the MuftTools team in the JNVST style, for timing practice. For the real format, read the sample questions in the NVS prospectus and the previous year booklet on the NVS admission portal.

Will the timer keep running if I close the page?

Yes. The start time is saved on your device, so if the page reloads the countdown carries on from the right point, just as the clock in an exam hall would. Press Pause if you need a break.
