A character certificate the school can stand behind
When a student moves to a new school, joins a college or applies for some courses and jobs, they are often asked for a character certificate from their last school. It is the head of the school's short statement about how the student conducted themselves while they were there. This page opens the school certificate maker with the character certificate format ready, for the school office to fill in and print.
The format, part by part
- Letterhead, reference number and date, as on every certificate from the office.
- Title: Character Certificate.
- Identity of the student: name, son/daughter of the parent, and the admission number if you want it on record.
- Status: "is a student of this school, studying in Class 8-B in the session 2026-27" for a current student, or "was a student of this school from 2019 to 2026 and last studied in Class 10" for a former student.
- Character and conduct: "To the best of my knowledge, she bears a good moral character. Her conduct in the school was very good." Choose good, very good or excellent for the conduct.
- Remarks (optional): a line on achievements or responsibilities, such as house captain or a sports medal, if the school's records support it.
- Purpose and good wishes, then the principal's signature and seal.
Writing it fairly
A character certificate carries the school's name, so keep it factual. Choose the conduct rating the student's record supports, and add remarks only where the school has a record of them. If the school would rather not comment on a student's conduct, it is better to issue a plain bonafide or leaving certificate than to write something that is not accurate.
For former students, check the years and the last class in the register before printing; these are the details most often checked by the receiving institution.
School certificate or police certificate?
Many people search for a "character certificate" when they actually need a police character or verification certificate, for example for a job, a passport or renting a house. That one is issued by the police through each state's own service and cannot be made by a school. The school character certificate on this page is only about the student's conduct at school.
In Hindi
Choose हिन्दी under Language. The certificate becomes "चरित्र प्रमाण-पत्र", with wording such as "मेरी जानकारी में उसका नैतिक चरित्र एवं विद्यालय में आचरण बहुत अच्छा रहा है।" Students' names can be typed in Hindi or English.
Students who need to request this certificate can write to the principal with the school application generator, which has a ready application for a character certificate.

Frequently asked questions
What is written in a school character certificate?
The student's name and parent's name, whether they are studying in the school or studied there (with the years and last class), a line on their moral character and conduct, any achievements, the purpose if needed, and the principal's signature with the school seal.
Is a school character certificate the same as a police character certificate?
No. A school character certificate describes the student's conduct while at the school and is signed by the principal. A police character or verification certificate is issued by the police through the state's own process and is a different document.
Can a character certificate be given to a student who has left?
Yes. Choose 'Has left the school' and enter the years and the last class studied. The wording changes to 'was a student of this school from … to …'.
Who can sign a character certificate?
The head of the institution, that is the principal, headmaster or headmistress, usually with the school seal. Choose the title under 'Signed by'.
