Proof that a student studies at the school
A bonafide certificate is a short document from the school confirming that a student is genuinely enrolled there in a given class and session. Scholarship portals, banks opening a student account, passport offices and transport offices offering student passes often ask for one. The school office issues it on its letterhead, usually after a written request.
This page opens the bonafide certificate request. It is a short letter: who the student is, what the certificate is for, and a request to issue it.
The purpose line
Schools sometimes word the certificate differently depending on its use, and some want to know the purpose for their records. Type it so it reads after "needs a bonafide certificate for":
- a scholarship application
- opening a bank account
- a passport application
- a student bus pass
- an education loan
The letter becomes: "She needs a bonafide certificate for a scholarship application. I request you to kindly issue a bonafide certificate for her at the earliest."
Bonafide or character certificate?
| Bonafide certificate | Character certificate | |
|---|---|---|
| Confirms | The student is studying here now | The student's conduct while at the school |
| Usually asked for | Scholarships, bank accounts, passes, passports | Admission elsewhere, some job and course applications |
| Letter here | Bonafide certificate | Character certificate |
If you need both, write two letters, or ask for the character certificate along with the TC in the Transfer certificate letter when leaving the school.
Details to include
- Class, section and roll number of the current session.
- Admission (SR) number, so the office can check the register.
- For a parent's request, the parent's mobile number, so the office can call when it is ready.
Who issues it
Only the school can issue a bonafide certificate, because it is the school's own confirmation. This page writes the student's or parent's request; the school prepares, signs and stamps the certificate itself. Schools that need to prepare such certificates on letterhead can use the request to check details against their register.
Tips for a quick certificate
- Apply a week or so before the scholarship or bank deadline; the office may need the principal's signature, which can take a day or two.
- Ask whether the school charges a small fee for certificates.
- Check the student's name and date of birth on the certificate against the Aadhaar or birth certificate before you leave the office; a mismatch can get a scholarship form rejected.
- Ask for two copies if you need one for a bank and one for a scholarship.
