The SSC CHSL typing test in brief

Candidates who clear the written part of SSC CHSL for Lower Division Clerk (LDC) or Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) posts sit a typing test on a computer. It is qualifying, so it decides whether you can be selected rather than where you rank. The rules below are from the SSC CHSL 2026 notice (para 13.9.13.7), published on 7 September 2026.

The notice says speed is judged on the accuracy of typing a given passage, and the evaluation follows SSC's published guidelines. The tool above is set to this English test. For the Hindi medium, use the Hindi typing test in SSC mode.

What counts as a mistake

SSC's revised guidelines for evaluating typing scripts split errors in two:

  • Full mistakes: each word or figure left out, each wrong word, each extra word, each spelling error (a letter repeated, added, dropped or changed), a repeated word, and an incomplete word.
  • Half mistakes: spacing errors (no space between words, or a space inside a word), wrong capital or small letters, punctuation left out, added or changed, transposed words, and paragraphs started with spaces instead of the Tab key.

The candidate instructions also ask for exactly one space after each punctuation mark, numbers and years typed as printed, and no extra matter. You may correct mistakes within the time, and you do not need to type the passage twice if you finish early. The tool marks each full mistake in red and each half mistake in yellow, so you can see which habit costs you most.

The mistake limit

SSC sets the allowed percentage of mistakes for each exam in its result notices. For CHSL 2025, the first allocation notice of August 2026 allowed 7% for UR candidates and 10% for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, ESM and PwD candidates. Pick your category above and the result tells you whether you are inside that limit. The guidelines we found do not say exactly which word count SSC divides by, so this tool uses the passage words you reached and says so on the result.

A practice plan for the 10-minute test

  • Week 1: Practice mode, 5 minutes a day, Backspace on. Aim for under 5% mistakes at any speed.
  • Week 2: SSC mode, full 10 minutes. Note your key depressions per hour and your most common mistake type.
  • Week 3 onwards: one SSC test a day, with Backspace off once or twice a week and highlights off to match the exam screen. Keep at least 10,500 key depressions an hour with mistakes below your limit.

Remember that this is practice with our own passages. The real result comes from SSC's software and evaluators.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the SSC CHSL typing test?

10 minutes for LDC and JSA posts. Candidates allowed a scribe get 5 extra minutes, so 15 minutes, according to the SSC CHSL 2026 notice.

Is the SSC typing test qualifying?

Yes. The notice says the skill test and typing test are of a qualifying nature, so the marks are not added to your merit, but you must pass to be selected for posts that need it.

How many mistakes are allowed in SSC CHSL typing?

For CHSL 2025, SSC's allocation notice of August 2026 allowed mistakes up to 7% for UR candidates and 10% for other categories in the LDC/JSA typing test. The limits are set exam by exam, so check the result notice for your year.

Is a wrong capital letter a full mistake?

No. SSC's evaluation guidelines treat wrong capitalisation as a half mistake, along with spacing errors, punctuation errors and transposed words. Missed, wrong, extra or misspelt words are full mistakes.

What about the DEO data entry test?

Choose SSC DEO skill test at the top of the tool. It sets 15 minutes and the 8,000 key depressions an hour standard used for most DEO posts in the CHSL notice.
