Lost your phone? Start with the police report

A lost or stolen phone means more than the cost of the handset. Your SIM can receive OTPs, your apps may be logged in, and someone could misuse the device. The first written step is a report to the police, and its copy is what you need for almost everything after that: blocking the handset, getting a duplicate SIM, and any insurance claim. This page opens the Lost / stolen mobile letter, which asks for exactly the details a police station and the blocking portal look for.

What to keep ready

DetailWhere to find it
IMEI 1 and IMEI 2On the phone box or purchase bill (15 digits each)
Brand, model and colourBox or bill
Mobile number in the phoneYour SIM
Date, time and placeWhen and where you last had it
Police stationThe station for the area where it was lost

The tool checks that each IMEI has 15 digits. Choose "Lost" or "Stolen", because the wording changes and a theft may need an FIR.

After the report: block the handset

  1. Keep the police report copy or acknowledgement.
  2. Get a duplicate SIM for your number from your operator. The blocking request sends an OTP to this number, and the Sanchar Saathi portal notes that SMS on a reissued SIM starts only after 24 hours.
  3. Request the block on Sanchar Saathi (CEIR) with the police report copy and an ID proof; the purchase invoice is optional. Save the request ID.
  4. If the phone is found, tell the police and unblock it through the same portal with the request ID.

A blocked phone can't be used on Indian mobile networks, which makes a stolen phone less useful to a thief.

Other things to do quickly

  • Change the passwords of your email and banking apps from another device, and sign out of sessions where you can.
  • Ask your bank to block UPI on the lost number if you are worried about misuse.
  • If money is taken from your account, call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in at once.

Writing the letter

Write the facts exactly as they happened, even if you are not sure whether the phone was lost or stolen; choose "Lost" if you don't know.

The letter is addressed to the Station House Officer of the police station. It states the phone's model, number and IMEIs, when and where it was lost, anything else you add in your own words, and asks the police to register the complaint and give you a copy for blocking, a duplicate SIM and insurance. Many state police websites and apps also accept lost-article reports online; check yours, and use this letter where a written complaint is needed.

This is a letter format, not legal advice. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my phone's IMEI number?

It is printed on the phone's box and usually on the purchase bill. If you still have the phone, dial *#06#. Dual-SIM phones have two IMEI numbers; write both.

Why do I need a police complaint for a lost phone?

To block the phone on the Sanchar Saathi (CEIR) portal you need a copy of the police report, along with an ID proof. Insurers and mobile operators may also ask for it.

How do I block my lost phone?

File the police report and keep a copy, get a duplicate SIM for the lost number (the OTP goes there), then fill in the block request on sancharsaathi.gov.in with the police report and ID. Save the request ID; you need it to unblock the phone if it is found.

Can I write the lost mobile complaint in Hindi?

Yes. Choose हिन्दी for 'मोबाइल फ़ोन खोने की सूचना', with your IMEI and number in the letter.
