Explaining a gap in your studies
Many students take a year or two off between school and college: to prepare for NEET, JEE or other entrance exams, because of illness or family circumstances, or to work. When they apply for admission later, colleges and counselling bodies often ask for a gap certificate, which in practice is an affidavit sworn before a notary. It tells the institution what you did during the gap and confirms you were not involved in any criminal activity.
This page opens the Education gap format. Fill in the last exam you passed, the year, the gap period and the reason, and the draft writes the paragraphs for you.
What the affidavit says
- That you passed a named exam (for example "Class 12 (CBSE)") in a given year.
- That from one date to another you did not take admission anywhere, and why: exam preparation, illness, family reasons, work, or a reason in your own words.
- That during this period you were not involved in any criminal or anti-social activity.
- What the affidavit is for, such as "NEET UG counselling" or "admission to B.Sc.", and for all legal purposes.
The verification then confirms paragraphs 1 to 4 with the place and date, and the notary block sits at the bottom.
Filling it in well
| Field | Tip |
|---|---|
| Last exam passed | Name the board or university: "Class 12 (UP Board)", "B.Sc. first year, XYZ University" |
| Gap from / to | Use months and years ("June 2024" to "October 2026") so there is no doubt |
| Reason | Pick the closest option and add a short detail, such as the exam you prepared for |
| Purpose | The admission or counselling you are applying to |
Check the institution's own format
Some counselling authorities, universities and colleges publish their own gap affidavit format, sometimes with extra lines (for example that you did not study elsewhere, or a parent's undertaking). If you are given one, copy its wording exactly. You can paste it into "Change the wording yourself" and still use the tool's layout and stamp-paper space. If there is no format, this common one is usually fine, but confirm with the admission office before you buy the stamp paper.
Who should sign
An affidavit is normally sworn by an adult. If you are 18 or older, you are the deponent. If you are younger, ask the college whether a parent should swear it instead. Bring ID for whoever signs, and sign only in front of the notary or oath commissioner.
Stamp paper and copies
The stamp paper value depends on your state and on the institution's rules, so ask them or your notary. Print the PDF at actual size and leave the stamp area clear by choosing 6, 10 or 14 cm of blank space. Keep a few photocopies of the notarised affidavit for later rounds of counselling, and carry the original to document verification.
This is a draft format, not legal advice, and everything in it must be true. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Frequently asked questions
What is a gap certificate?
It is usually an affidavit in which a student explains a break in studies: the last exam passed, the gap period, the reason, and that they were not involved in any criminal or anti-social activity. Colleges and counselling bodies ask for it at admission.
Is the gap affidavit format fixed for NEET counselling?
Some counselling authorities and colleges publish their own format. If yours does, use it exactly. Otherwise this common format covers what they usually look for.
Who signs a gap affidavit for a minor student?
An affidavit is generally sworn by an adult. If the student is under 18, ask the college whether a parent should make it instead; the parent is then the deponent and describes the student's gap.
What reasons can I give for the gap?
The tool offers exam preparation, illness, family reasons, work or other. Add details in your own words, such as 'preparing for NEET UG'. Give the true reason and keep any proof, such as medical records.
Can I make the gap affidavit in Hindi?
Yes. Choose हिन्दी for the शिक्षा अंतराल शपथ पत्र, with the grammar set from the relation you choose.
