1Barcode type

This tool only draws the barcode. To sell in supermarkets or on online marketplaces, use the EAN number allotted to your company by GS1 India, the only authorised source of barcodes starting with 890. Made-up numbers can clash with other products.

Number under bars

Keep dark bars on a light background. Red, yellow or light bars often fail to scan.

Type a barcode number to see it.

Scan the downloaded barcode with a phone scanner app or your billing scanner before printing many copies.

Barcode stickers for your label printer

A small thermal label printer and a roll of stickers is how many shops, bakeries, pharmacies and online sellers label their stock. Most label software for these printers is either paid or awkward to set up. This page opens the barcode generator in roll mode: type your products, pick the label size and download a PDF in which every page is exactly one sticker. Your printer then feeds the roll one label at a time.

Step by step

  1. Measure a label. Use a ruler on one sticker, not the backing paper. Note whether the roll has one label or two side by side.
  2. Pick the size under Paper: 50 × 25, 38 × 25, 50 × 30, 75 × 50, 100 × 50 mm, two 50 × 25 mm across, or Custom.
  3. Add products, one per line: name, price, barcode. For your own stock codes, use Code 128; for products sold through other stores, use your GS1 EAN-13 numbers.
  4. Add extra lines if you need them, such as a packing date, net quantity, batch or HSN code.
  5. Set copies for each product and download the PDF.
  6. Set the printer's paper size to the same label size in its printer settings on your computer, then print the PDF at 100% / Actual size.

Common roll sizes and what fits on them

LabelWorks well for
38 × 25 mmName, price and barcode on small packets and jewellery tags; keep names short
50 × 25 mmName, MRP line, barcode and one extra line such as a packing date
50 × 30 mmEverything above with room for two extra lines
75 × 50 or 100 × 50 mmCartons, gift hampers, courier boxes and shelf labels

The preview shows the first few labels exactly as they will print. If a label is too small for all your lines, the tool warns you; drop the shop name or an extra line, or use a bigger label.

Getting clean, scannable prints

  • Calibrate once. If labels print across two stickers, the printer has lost track of the gaps. Run the label calibration from its manual.
  • Adjust darkness, not size. If bars look faint, raise the darkness or heat setting in the printer driver rather than scaling the PDF.
  • Scan before a long run. Print three labels, scan them with your billing scanner, and check the price and name on screen.
  • Use black only. Thermal printers print one colour, and black bars on white scan most reliably.

MRP and packing details

For packaged goods, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 list the declarations a package must carry. The Department of Consumer Affairs overview mentions details such as the packer's name and address, net quantity, month and year of packing, MRP and consumer care details. A small roll sticker rarely has room for all of these, so treat it as a price and barcode sticker on top of the full product label, and check what applies to your product.

Frequently asked questions

Which label size should I choose for my roll?

Measure one label on the roll with a ruler. Common sizes for small shops are 50 × 25 mm and 38 × 25 mm; larger 75 × 50 or 100 × 50 mm labels suit cartons and shipping. If your roll has two labels side by side, choose two across. Anything else, pick Custom and type the size in millimetres.

Why is my label printing on two stickers or half a sticker?

The printer's paper size does not match the label, or its label sensor needs calibrating. Set the paper or stock size in the printer settings to exactly the label size, print the PDF at 100%, and run the calibration described in your printer's manual.

Can I print 100 copies of the same sticker?

Yes. Type the product once and set Copies of each product to 100. The PDF will have 100 pages, one per sticker, and the printer feeds the roll one label at a time.

Do thermal stickers fade?

Direct thermal labels, which need no ribbon, can fade with heat and sunlight over time. Labels printed with a ribbon (thermal transfer) usually last longer. Ask your label supplier which type you have if the stickers must stay readable for a long time.

Can I add the packing date, net quantity or HSN code?

Yes. Use Extra line 1 and 2 for text on every label, or add a line after a | sign for one product. They print as small text under the barcode and are not part of the barcode itself.
