Why three-letter words matter
Once a child reads घर and जल with ease, the next step is a word with one more letter. Three-letter words without matras (तीन अक्षर वाले शब्द) such as कमल, नमक, मटर, महल and सड़क ask the child to hold three sounds in mind and blend them in the right order. It sounds like a small step, but this is where many children start reading words instead of single letters, and where reading speed starts to grow.
This sheet is practice to go with Sarangi, the NCERT Hindi book for Classes 1 and 2. It also works for any child who has finished two-letter words and is not yet on matras.
Question types you will see
Each sheet mixes four kinds of questions. Children join three letters into a word (प + ल + क gives पलक) and also break a word back into its letters. They complete a short sentence by choosing between two three-letter words. In the multiple-choice part they pick the only three-letter word from a set that includes shorter words like फल and longer ones like अजगर. True-or-false lines check the letter count, and a match-the-columns question pairs letter groups with words. The letter ड़ in सड़क counts as one letter, just like any other.
How to use this sheet
- The page opens with Class 1, Hindi and three-letter words chosen, 10 questions on Medium.
- For a quick daily practice keep 10. For a weekend test or a Class 2 child, choose 15 or 20.
- For a whole class, pick Sets A, B and C and hand them out row by row, so children sitting together cannot copy.
- Type the school or tuition name for the header, then print or download the PDF.
- Check with the answer key at the end, or switch the key off if you are sending the sheet home.
Tips for parents and teachers
- The order of letters. कमल and कलम use the same three letters in a different order. Swapping the order is a very common mistake, so if the answer key shows one, put both words in front of the child and ask them to read each slowly.
- Don't skip the middle letter. Children who read fast sometimes jump from the first letter to the last. Ask them to point under each letter with a finger while reading.
- Read the sentence aloud. In the sentence questions, have the child read the whole sentence with each option in the blank. Only one will make sense.
- Write, don't just read. After marking, ask the child to copy any word they got wrong into their notebook three times.
- Short and regular. One sheet every second day keeps the words fresh without making Hindi feel like a chore.
If three letters still feel hard, go back a step with the do akshar wale shabd worksheet. When they are easy, try the Hindi matra worksheet or open the worksheet generator and choose four-letter words for Class 2.

Frequently asked questions
What are some teen akshar wale shabd without matra?
Common ones are कमल, नमक, मटर, कलम, महल, बतख, लहर, मगर, शहर, सड़क, गरम and पलक. All of them are three consonants with no matra, so a child can read them as soon as they can blend letters. This worksheet uses words like these in every question.
Should my child learn three-letter words before matras?
Many teachers follow that order: two-letter words, then three- and four-letter words, and only then the matras. Reading longer words without matras builds blending speed, so the matras feel like one new thing rather than many. If your child is already learning matras at school, you can use both sheets side by side.
Can I use this worksheet for Class 2?
Yes. Three-letter words are offered for both Class 1 and Class 2 in the generator, as practice to go with Sarangi. For a Class 2 child, choose 15 or 20 questions, and when it gets too easy, switch the topic to four-letter words.
Why are two- and four-letter words in the options?
In the multiple-choice questions, the child has to spot the one word with exactly three letters among shorter and longer words, such as फल or अजगर. Some true-or-false lines also give a wrong letter count on purpose. This makes the child actually count instead of guessing.
