What Fractions in Disguise covers

The first chapter of Ganita Prakash Part II for Class 8 is Fractions in Disguise, and it is about percentages. "Per cent" means "out of a hundred", so 30% is simply the fraction 30/100 in a different outfit. Children see percentages all around them: 85% marks on a report card, a "20% off" board outside a shoe shop during a festival sale, the GST line on a restaurant bill, battery level on a phone. The chapter helps them move easily between fractions, decimals and percentages and use percentages to compare and to work out changes.

This worksheet practises those everyday skills:

  • writing fractions such as 3/4 or 7/20 as percentages, and decimals such as 0.45 as percentages;
  • writing a percentage as a fraction in simplest form, so 12% becomes 3/25;
  • finding 10%, 20%, 25% or 50% of a number, as blanks and as multiple choice;
  • "23 out of 40 is what percent?", with answers that can be decimals;
  • an amount in rupees increased or decreased by a percentage (Medium and Hard);
  • true or false checks and matching common fractions with their percentages;
  • word problems on test marks, the price of a school bag after a discount, and a village whose population grows.

How to use the sheet

  1. The page opens with Class 8, Fractions in Disguise, Medium level and 15 questions.
  2. Pick Easy to begin. Its blanks are about converting fractions and decimals and finding a simple percent of a number.
  3. Medium adds "out of" questions and rupee amounts increased or decreased by a percentage.
  4. Hard, with 20 questions, makes a good revision test before the half-yearly exam.
  5. Keep the answer key on and print. A tuition teacher can choose Sets A, B, C for a batch.

Tips for parents and teachers

Teach a few anchors first: 50% is half, 25% is a quarter, 10% is one-tenth, and 1% is one-hundredth. With these, a child can build most others in their head. 15% is 10% plus half of 10%, and 75% is 50% plus 25%. Ask for a rough estimate before the exact answer, so that a result like "15% of ₹800 is ₹1,200" looks wrong at once.

Two mistakes come up again and again. The first is subtracting the percentage itself instead of the amount, such as writing ₹800 – 15 = ₹785 for a 15% discount. The second is using the wrong total in "out of" questions. Ask the child to say the question aloud: "23 out of 40" means the total is 40, so divide by 40.

Shopping makes good practice. During a sale, let your child work out the final price on a tag before you reach the counter, then check it on the bill. Because percentages are fractions underneath, a child who struggles here may need a quick round of the Class 7 fractions worksheet or the decimals worksheet first. Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a fraction to a percentage quickly?

Multiply the fraction by 100. If the denominator divides 100, make it 100 first: 7/20 = 35/100 = 35%. For a denominator like 8, divide: 1/8 = 0.125, which is 12.5%.

How do you find the price after a discount?

Find the discount and subtract it, or find what is left directly. For a ₹1,200 bag with 15% off, the discount is ₹180 and the price is ₹1,020. The quicker way is 85% of ₹1,200, which also gives ₹1,020.

Why is the Class 8 percentage chapter called Fractions in Disguise?

A percentage is a fraction with 100 as the denominator, written with a % sign instead. So 40% is just 40/100, or 2/5, in another form. That fits the name well, and it is why this sheet keeps switching between fractions and percentages.

Does this worksheet include profit and loss or simple interest?

No. It covers converting fractions and decimals to percentages, percentages to fractions, a percent of a number, marks as a percentage, discounts and increases or decreases by a percent. Profit, loss and interest questions are not part of it.
