Naming words and their three types

A sangya (संज्ञा) is a naming word: the name of a person, place, thing, animal or feeling. By Class 3, children are expected to do two things with nouns. First, find every noun in a sentence. Second, say which type it is. This sheet practises both, as practice to go with Veena, the NCERT Hindi book for Class 3.

The three types on the sheet are:

  • व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा (proper noun): the name of one particular person, place or thing, such as सलमा, मुंबई, गंगा, हिमालय or ताजमहल.
  • जातिवाचक संज्ञा (common noun): a word for a whole group of similar things, such as लड़का, पहाड़, किताब, कुर्सी or चिड़िया.
  • भाववाचक संज्ञा (abstract noun): a feeling, quality or state, such as खुशी, ईमानदारी, थकान, मित्रता or बुढ़ापा.

What is on each sheet

Children write all the nouns from a short sentence (some sentences have two), choose the noun from four words, name the type of a given noun, decide whether a statement like "यह जातिवाचक संज्ञा है" is true, and match words to what they name: a person, a place, a thing, an animal or bird, or a feeling.

How to use this sheet

  1. The page opens with Class 3, Hindi and Sangya, 15 questions on Medium.
  2. Teaching the types for the first time? Start with 10 questions and go through the first sheet together.
  3. For a class test, choose 20 questions and Sets A, B and C.
  4. Add your school or coaching name and download the PDF.
  5. Use the answer key to mark, then ask the child to explain one wrong answer in their own words.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • The "only one" test. Ask: is there only one of this in the world? There is only one यमुना, so it is व्यक्तिवाचक. There are many rivers, so नदी is जातिवाचक.
  • The "can you touch it" test. You can touch a कुर्सी but not दया or डर. Things you can only feel or think about are usually भाववाचक.
  • Stopping after one noun. When a sentence like ‘पिताजी नई साइकिल लाए’ has two nouns, many children write only the first. Tell them to read the sentence again and look for every naming word.
  • Adjective or noun? Children often call खट्टा or सुंदर a noun. Compare pairs side by side: सुंदर and सुंदरता, मीठा and मिठास.
  • Practise once or twice a week while the topic is being taught, then once a month for revision.

If your child is not sure about describing words yet, try the Hindi visheshan worksheet first. For more Class 3 grammar, see the ling badlo worksheet.

Frequently asked questions

What are the three types of sangya taught in Class 3?

व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा is the name of one particular person, place or thing, like गीता, जयपुर or यमुना. जातिवाचक संज्ञा names a whole kind of thing, like लड़का, शहर or नदी. भाववाचक संज्ञा names a feeling, quality or state that you cannot touch, like दया, बचपन or सुंदरता.

Why do some books show five types of sangya?

Some grammar books add द्रव्यवाचक (materials, like पानी or सोना) and समूहवाचक (groups, like सेना or कक्षा) as separate types. Others treat both as part of जातिवाचक. This worksheet sticks to the three main types, so check which list your child's school follows.

How is भाववाचक संज्ञा different from a visheshan?

A visheshan describes a noun, while a भाववाचक संज्ञा is itself the name of a quality. सुंदर is a visheshan (सुंदर फूल), but सुंदरता is a noun. In the same way मीठा describes and मिठास names the quality. Children often mix these pairs up.

Can I make a sangya worksheet for Class 2?

Yes. Choose Class 2 in the generator and the sheet becomes practice to go with Sarangi. Class 2 sheets only ask children to find and identify nouns; the questions on the three types appear from Class 3.
