Fractions in Class 6 Ganita Prakash

Chapter 7 of the Class 6 Ganita Prakash book, Fractions, starts from sharing things equally and builds up to working with fractions as numbers. Children name the shaded part of a whole, write mixed fractions as improper fractions, find equivalent fractions, reduce a fraction to its lowest terms, compare two fractions, and add and subtract fractions whose denominators are different.

The sheet on this page is set to that chapter. Here is what turns up on it:

  • Fraction bars. A bar is drawn with some parts shaded, and the child writes the shaded part in its simplest form, so 4 out of 8 must become 1/2.
  • Fill in the blanks. Simplest form, a missing number in an equivalent fraction such as 2/5 = ?/10, changing between mixed numbers and improper fractions, the signs >, < or =, and sums and differences like 1/2 – 3/8.
  • Multiple choice. Picking the simplest form from four options, or the largest of four fractions.
  • True or false. Fraction sums, some of them correct and some made with the usual mistakes.
  • Match the columns. Five fractions on the left to match with their simplest forms on the right.
  • Word problems. A ribbon with a piece cut off, how much of a book has been read over two days, and how many litres are in a tank that is three-quarters full.

Setting up a fractions sheet

  1. Class 6, Maths and Fractions are already selected. On Easy, the fill-in questions stick to simplest form, equivalent fractions and mixed numbers; Medium and Hard add comparing fractions and adding and subtracting them.
  2. Pick 10 questions for a quick check after school, or 20 for a practice period in class.
  3. Teachers can choose Sets A, B and C for a class test, so three neighbours never share a sheet.
  4. Download the PDF. On screen and in print, fractions are drawn one above the other, as children write them in their notebooks.
  5. Keep the answer key on for home practice. For a test, switch it off and print a separate copy with the key for yourself.

Tips for fractions practice

Watch for one mistake above all. Many children add 1/2 and 2/8 by adding the numerators and the denominators and get 3/10. If this shows up, stop the sheet and go back to drawings: half a paratha and a quarter of a paratha placed together.

Compare with a common denominator, not by looking. Children often think 3/9 is bigger than 3/4 because 9 is bigger than 4. Ask them to rewrite both fractions with the same denominator before choosing.

Simplify at the end. A correct answer of 6/8 is not finished. Ask your child to check for a common factor every time; this habit links nicely with the factors work in the Prime Time worksheet.

Little and often. Fractions need repeated short practice more than long sessions. Three short sheets a week, each made fresh with New questions, will do more than one long paper. Mark the wrong answers with the key, and give the same kind of question again two days later.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my child add the tops and the bottoms when adding fractions?

Because it looks like the natural thing to do, and it works for nothing else. Show with a drawing that half a roti plus a quarter roti is three quarters, not two sixths. Then practise changing both fractions to the same denominator first; the true or false questions on this sheet include such wrong sums on purpose so children learn to spot them.

Should answers always be in simplest form?

On this sheet, yes. The answer key gives every fraction in its lowest terms, so 4/6 is written as 2/3. If your child writes an equal but unsimplified answer, give part marks and ask them to divide the top and bottom by a common factor to finish it.

How can I check fraction answers quickly?

Use the answer key at the end of the PDF, which lists every answer in question order. For match the columns, the key shows which item on the left goes with which on the right. You can switch the key off before printing if the sheet is for a test and you will check it yourself later.

Is there a fractions worksheet for Class 7 as well?

Yes. The Class 7 book has its own chapter called Working with Fractions, and there is a separate Class 7 fractions worksheet page on this site for it. This page stays at the Class 6 level of Ganita Prakash Chapter 7.
