What matra practice covers
A matra (मात्रा) is the sign a vowel takes when it joins a consonant. The letter क with the आ matra becomes का, with the ई matra it becomes की, and so on. Children in Class 1 learn to spot these signs, say the right sound and write words that use them. This sheet is practice to go with Sarangi, the NCERT Hindi book for Class 1, and it covers nine matras: ा, ि, ी, ु, ू, े, ै, ो and ौ.
The words are simple and familiar: कान, गाजर, दिन, खीर, फूल, सेब, बैल, मोर, मौसम and many more.
Choose which matras to practise
Under "Which matras" you can pick one of six options. This page starts on All matras, which is good for revision. To teach step by step, pick a single group instead:
| Option | Signs | Example words |
|---|---|---|
| All matras | ा ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ | a mix of everything |
| आ की मात्रा | ा | नाक, ताला, बादल |
| इ and ई | ि ी | दिल, किरण, तीर, दीपक |
| उ and ऊ | ु ू | चुप, मुकुट, धूप, सूरज |
| ए and ऐ | े ै | शेर, रेल, पैर, बैठक |
| ओ and औ | ो ौ | ढोल, बोतल, चौक, दौड़ |
Children name the matra in a word, build a word from letters and a matra (म + ो + र gives मोर), find the word with a given matra, answer true or false, and match words to their matras.
How to use this sheet
- The page opens with Class 1, Hindi, Matras and All matras, 10 questions on Medium.
- Teaching a new matra this week? Change "Which matras" to that group and keep 10 questions.
- For a test at the end of the term, leave it on All matras and choose 20 questions.
- In class, use Sets A and B so children sitting next to each other get different words.
- Print the PDF and keep the answer key page aside for marking.
Tips for parents and teachers
- The छोटी इ puzzle. The ि sign is written before the letter but sounded after it, so दिन looks like it starts with the matra. Many children write it after the letter. Point this out every time it happens.
- Short and long sounds. Stretch the sound when you read aloud: the इ in दिन is quick, the ई in खीर is long. Children hear the difference before they see it.
- Top and bottom signs. ु and ू sit below the letter, while े, ै, ो and ौ have strokes on top. Ask the child to count the strokes for ए and ऐ: one or two.
- Mark mistakes by matra, not by word. When checking with the answer key, note which matra was wrong. If it's always ई, switch the picker to "इ and ई" for the next sheet.
- Read before you write. Ask the child to read every word aloud before answering. A matra that is read correctly is usually written correctly.
If matras feel too hard, go back to the three-letter words worksheet for a few days.

Frequently asked questions
How many matras are there in Hindi?
Every Hindi vowel except अ has a matra. School books usually teach ा, ि, ी, ु, ू, ृ, े, ै, ो and ौ, and अ itself has no sign because it is already part of each consonant. This worksheet covers the nine from ा to ौ; the ऋ matra (ृ) is not included.
Can I make a worksheet for only छोटी इ and बड़ी ई?
Yes. In the 'Which matras' box, choose 'इ and ई'. Every word on the sheet will then use ि or ी, which is the most useful way to practise the difference between the short and long sound.
Which matra should a child learn first?
Many teachers start with आ (ा) because it is a single stroke after the letter and easy to hear. After that, pairs work well: इ/ई, उ/ऊ, ए/ऐ and ओ/औ, each for a week or so. The matra picker on this page follows the same groups.
Is the same worksheet useful in Class 2 or 3?
Yes. Matras are offered for Classes 1, 2 and 3 in the generator, and the question types and word lists are the same, so choosing a higher class mainly changes the header and book line. Older children who still mix up ि and ी can use it for quick revision with 20 questions.
