Class 5 reasoning: same types, more steps

In Class 5 the reasoning question types are mostly the ones children met in Classes 3 and 4, but each question now asks for one more step. A letter series uses pairs of letters moving in opposite directions; a direction question asks how far someone is from the start, not just which way they face; a calendar question jumps across most of a month. This page opens the generator at Class 5, Reasoning only, 25 questions on Medium, and every question comes with its answer and a line of working.

Worked examples

These examples were written for this page. The papers you make have different ones every time.

  • Letter pairs. AZ, BY, CX, ? The first letter moves forward one, the second moves back one: DW.
  • Number codes. If A = 1, B = 2 and BAD is written as 214, then CAB is 312. Some questions add the positions instead: CAB becomes 3 + 1 + 2 = 6. Check which rule the example follows before you start.
  • Walking routes. Walk 4 km north, turn right and walk 3 km. You are 3 km east and 4 km north of the start, which is 5 km away in a straight line (3, 4, 5 is a right-triangle family worth remembering).
  • Calendar. If 3 March is a Monday, 24 March is 21 days later, exactly three weeks, so it is also a Monday.
  • Clock in a mirror. A mirror shows 4:20. Real time = 11:60 – 4:20 = 7:40.
  • Counting squares. A 3 by 3 grid has 9 small squares, 4 squares of size 2 by 2 and 1 big square: 14 in all.
  • Water image. With the water below a figure, top and bottom swap while left and right stay the same; with a mirror on the right, it is the other way round.

Why the answers can be trusted

Practice material with wrong answers is worse than none, because the child learns the mistake. Each question here is built together with its answer, and our test suite independently solves thousands of generated papers to check that exactly one option is right. Series are checked against several possible rules, codes are decoded from the example, routes are walked step by step, figures are rebuilt and their triangles and squares counted point by point, and dates come from the calendar.

A simple routine for Class 5

  1. Monday: a 25-question paper on screen with the timer. Note the score and time.
  2. Tuesday: redo every wrong question using the working line, without looking at the options.
  3. Thursday: a fresh printed paper with the OMR sheet, marked using the answer grid.
  4. Saturday: a Hard paper of 15 questions as a challenge.

For the maths half of an olympiad-style paper, see the Class 5 maths olympiad questions. For older children, the Class 6 reasoning paper adds clock angles and dates across months.

Frequently asked questions

Are mental ability and logical reasoning the same thing?

Different exams use different names, but the question types overlap a lot: series, analogies, odd one out, coding, directions, figures and calendars. This paper covers those common types. Check your own exam's syllabus for anything extra, such as paper folding or embedded figures, which this generator does not draw.

How do I solve 'mirror shows 4:20, what is the real time' questions?

Take the mirror time away from 11:60. 11:60 – 4:20 = 7:40. It works because a mirror swaps the clock face left to right, so the two times always add up to 12 hours.

Can I see the working for every answer?

Yes. The answer key has a quick grid of letters and then one line of working for each question. In the on-screen practice, the working opens under each question when you submit.

How many reasoning questions should a Class 5 child practise?

Twenty to twenty-five questions two or three times a week is plenty for most children. Quality matters more than quantity: always go back over the wrong answers.
