Things I have at home

Tick what you have. You'll see only projects that need nothing else (paper, pens, scissors, tape and water are assumed).

87 project ideas

Every idea uses safe, everyday things. Steps marked "with an adult" involve heat, sharp tools or electricity from cells: do them only with an adult. Never use mains electricity or strong chemicals.

Class 7: projects where things change colour, rust and conduct

Class 7 science is full of things you can watch happen: a yellow paper strip turning red-brown, a nail slowly rusting, a bulb lighting when a circuit closes, water drops appearing inside a bag tied over a leaf. That makes it one of the best years for experiment-style projects. The list above opens on Class 7 and shows the ideas that match this year's topics first.

How to make a class 7 project stand out

  • Use a control. In the transpiration project, a bag over a stick with no leaves is the control. In the rusting project, the nail in the dry jar is one. A control shows that the thing you changed made the difference.
  • Make a results table. For the indicator projects, list every sample with its colour and whether it is acidic, basic or neutral. For the pendulum, list the length and the time for 20 swings.
  • Add a graph. Plot pendulum length against swing time, or temperature against time for the convection or solar projects. A simple line graph on squared paper adds a lot.
  • Explain the science in your own words. Each idea has a "What it shows" section. Read it, then write the conclusion without copying it.

Safety for class 7 experiments

Several class 7 projects use warm water, so an adult should prepare and pour it. Circuits use only AA or torch cells; never touch plug points or house wiring. Don't taste any sample in the acid and base tests, even lemon juice that has been near other samples. Turmeric stains, so wear old clothes.

From idea to project file

Tap "Use in my report" on any idea, then add your details below. The file includes the cover, a certificate for your teacher to sign, an acknowledgement, an index with page numbers, and the write-up pages. Type your observations after the experiment, or print ruled lines and fill them in by hand. Download the A4 PDF or the Word file if you want to change the wording.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good acids and bases project for class 7?

Make a natural indicator from turmeric or china rose (gudhal) petals and test lemon juice, vinegar, soap solution, baking soda solution and sugar water. Record the colour each one turns and sort them into acidic, basic and neutral.

Which electricity project is safe for class 7?

Use only AA or torch cells: a simple circuit with a paper-clip switch, a tester that sorts conductors from insulators, or an electric quiz board. Never use plug points or mains wires for a project.

How do I show heat transfer at home?

Compare steel, plastic and wooden spoons in hot water to show conduction, or watch warm red water and cold blue water move in a bowl to show convection. An adult should handle the hot water.

How many days does the rusting project take?

About a week. Set up four nails (dry air, water and air, boiled water under oil, and salt water) and look at them every day. Photograph them so you can compare.

Do I need a working model for class 7?

Not necessarily. A careful experiment with a clear observation table is as good as a model for most school projects. Ask your teacher if they want a model specifically.
