Earphone, headset and Bluetooth mic tipsईयरफ़ोन, हेडसेट और ब्लूटूथ माइक के टिप्स
  • Wired earphones with a mic need a 4-ring (TRRS) plug. On a laptop, use the combined headphone-mic jack; a separate pink mic jack needs a splitter.
  • Bluetooth earbuds switch to a lower-quality "headset" mode while the mic is on. That is normal, so the voice sounds thinner.
  • If the level does not move, pick the headset in the Microphone list above. Phones usually switch on their own when you plug in.
  • Check the mute button on the earphone cable or headset before you test.
Echo and background noise tipsइको और शोर कम करने के टिप्स
  • Echo usually comes from your speakers reaching the mic. Use earphones, or lower the speaker volume.
  • Keep the mic a hand's width from your mouth and speak across it, not straight into it.
  • Fans, coolers and traffic raise the Background number. Close windows or move away from the fan.
  • If the clip sounds muffled, clean the mic hole gently with a soft dry brush and remove a thick case.

Why test the headphone mic separately

When people say "my mic is not working" on a call, the headset is often fine. The phone or laptop has simply kept using its own built-in mic, or the plug only connected the audio half. This page lets you choose exactly which microphone to test, so you can see whether the earphone, headset or earbud mic itself is picking up your voice.

Steps for each type of headset

Wired earphones with an inline mic

  1. Push the plug in fully. A loose plug often plays sound but drops the mic.
  2. Tap Start mic test and allow the microphone.
  3. Open the Microphone list and pick the entry for headphones or an external mic.
  4. Tap the small mic on the cable with a fingernail. If the bars jump, the right mic is selected.

The plug matters. A mic-capable 3.5 mm plug has four metal sections separated by three rings (TRRS). Plugs with two rings are for listening only. On desktops with separate pink and green jacks, use a Y-splitter so the mic reaches the pink jack.

USB-C and Lightning earphones

These have a tiny sound chip inside the plug. They show up in the list with the earphone's name or as a USB audio device. If you see nothing new after plugging in, try another port or a different adapter.

Bluetooth earbuds and neckbands

Connect them in your phone or laptop's Bluetooth settings first. On Windows, a Bluetooth headset can appear twice: one entry for music and one marked "Hands-Free" or "Headset". The second one carries the mic, so choose it. Expect a thinner sound while the mic is on: earbuds switch to a call mode that carries less detail. That is how Bluetooth calling works and not a defect.

Gaming and office headsets

Check for a mute button on the ear cup or cable, or a boom arm that mutes when you flip it up. Many headsets show a red light when muted. USB headsets often have their own mic volume in the system sound settings.

Comparing your headset with the built-in mic

Record a 10-second clip with the built-in mic, then switch to the headset in the list and record again. A good headset mic sits close to your mouth, so your voice should sound louder against the room and the Background number should stay similar or lower. If the headset clip is quieter and more muffled, check that its mic opening isn't covered by clothing, hair or a collar.

Common headset mic problems

What you seeLikely reason
Bars move only when you speak loudly near the laptopThe laptop mic is selected, not the headset
No headset in the listPlug not fully in, a two-ring plug, or Bluetooth not connected for calls
Crackle when you move the cableA loose wire near the plug or the inline remote
Your voice echoes on the playbackHear yourself live is on without earphones, or speaker sound leaking in

Once your headset works here, set it as the default input in your system's sound settings and in the call app, such as Google Meet or Zoom, so they use the same mic. Everything on this page runs in your browser; the test clip is never uploaded. Testing a whole phone? Try the touch screen test and see all checks on the phone and device tests page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my earphone mic is working?

Plug the earphones in, start the test and choose them in the Microphone list. Speak, then tap the small mic on the cable lightly. If the bars jump when you tap it, the earphone mic is working and is the one being used.

Why does my laptop use its own mic instead of my headset?

The browser uses the system's default input. Pick the headset in the Microphone list on this page, and set it as the default input in your laptop's sound settings so call apps use it too.

My earphones play sound but the mic doesn't work on my PC. Why?

Desktop PCs with separate green and pink jacks need a splitter for earphones that have a single four-section (TRRS) plug. Without it, only the sound part connects. Laptops with one combined jack usually don't need a splitter.

Why does my Bluetooth headset sound worse when the mic is on?

When the mic is active, Bluetooth earbuds switch to a call mode that carries sound both ways in less detail. Music sounds thinner during the test. That's normal behaviour, not a fault.

Can I test a gaming headset mic here?

Yes. USB and 3.5 mm gaming headsets both appear in the Microphone list. Check the mute button or flip-up boom on the headset first, since many mute automatically when the boom is raised.
