Download PDF quality

Used by the one-tap Download PDF button, which saves each page as a picture. Save as PDF keeps real text instead.

Preview

Your pages appear here exactly as they will be saved, so you can check them first.

Download PDF is one tap, but the pages are pictures, so the text cannot be selected. Save as PDF opens the print screen: choose Save as PDF there for sharp, searchable text.

How to save from the print screen

Android phone (Chrome)

  1. Tap Save as PDF (selectable text).
  2. At the top, tap the printer name and pick Save as PDF.
  3. Tap the round PDF button, choose a folder such as Downloads and tap Save.

iPhone or iPad (Safari)

  1. Tap Save as PDF (selectable text). The Print Options screen opens.
  2. Tap the Share button at the top of that screen.
  3. Choose Save to Files and pick a folder.

Computer (Chrome, Edge, Firefox)

  1. Click Save as PDF (selectable text).
  2. Set Destination (or Printer) to Save as PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF.
  3. Keep margins at Default or None and scale at 100%, untick Headers and footers, then click Save.

What happens to a DOCX file here

A .docx is not one file but a small ZIP package. Open it with any unzip tool and you find document.xml with the text, styles.xml with the fonts and spacing, a media folder with the pictures, and separate parts for each header and footer. Word, Google Docs and WPS all read these same parts. This converter does too, inside your browser: it unpacks the file, lays out the pages with the page size and margins written in the file, and then turns those pages into a PDF. No part of the package is sent anywhere.

Because the layout is built fresh on your device, a few things depend on what your device has. If the file uses Calibri, Cambria or Times New Roman and they are installed (as on most Windows computers), they are used. If not, close stand-ins are used: Noto Sans for sans-serif fonts and Noto Serif for serif ones, with matching Devanagari for Hindi. Lines can then wrap a word earlier or later than in Word, so always scroll through the preview.

Converting several DOCX files at once

Pick all the files in one go, or add more later. Each file is listed with its page count and paper size, and its pages appear in the preview in the same order. You then choose:

  • One PDF: every file joined into a single PDF, in the order you added them. Useful for a set of annexures, a job application with a cover letter and a resume, or monthly reports going to one person.
  • A PDF for each file (ZIP): one PDF per document, named after the original file, packed in a single ZIP download so your browser does not ask about many downloads.

To leave a file out, tap the × next to its name. Files the tool cannot read, such as an old .doc, stay in the list with a short note on how to re-save them, and are skipped when you save.

Picking the right save button

Download PDF makes the file in one tap by turning each page into a picture at 150 or 220 DPI. It looks exactly like the preview, but the text cannot be copied or searched. Save as PDF (selectable text) sends the same pages to your browser's print screen with the exact page size and no extra margins; choose Save as PDF there. That file has real text, prints sharper and is usually smaller, which helps with upload limits on job and admission portals.

Whichever you pick, the first page of the preview is what the first page of the PDF will be. If a heading sits alone at the bottom of a page, add a page break before it in Word (Ctrl + Enter) and convert again.

Frequently asked questions

What is a .docx file?

It is the standard file format of Microsoft Word since Word 2007, also saved by Google Docs, WPS Office and LibreOffice. Inside, it is a ZIP package of XML files that describe the text, styles, pictures and page setup. This tool reads that package directly in your browser.

Can I convert several DOCX files into one PDF?

Yes. Choose up to 20 files at once. Under Several files, pick One PDF to join them in the order you added them, or A PDF for each file to get separate PDFs inside one ZIP download.

Are page numbers and headers kept?

Yes. Headers and footers from the file are drawn on every page, and Page X of Y fields are filled in with the real page numbers after the pages are laid out.

What about .docm and .dotx files?

They are read like a normal .docx. Macros in a .docm file are never run, and the tool tells you they were ignored. A .dotx template converts the content saved in the template.

Is there a file size or daily limit?

There is no daily limit and nothing to sign up for. Very large files with hundreds of pictures depend on your device's memory, so on an older phone convert long documents in parts if the page becomes slow.
