On a phone or tablet, connect a USB (OTG) or Bluetooth keyboard first. The on-screen phone keyboard does not send real key presses, so it can't be tested here.
Press every key once. Blue = held down now, green = works, orange = typed twice by itself, red = held too long (may be stuck). While this area is focused, keys like Tab, Space and F5 stay on the page; click outside it to stop.

How to test ghosting and key rollover
Hold several keys together and watch "Held at once". If a key you hold stays white, the keyboard dropped it (ghosting). Try the combos games use: W+A+Shift+Space, or Q+W+E+R. Many laptop and office keyboards register only 2 to 6 keys at once in some combinations, which is normal for them.
Why laptop keyboards need their own test
A laptop keyboard is thin, built into the body and joined to the motherboard by a fragile ribbon cable. A drop of tea, a crumb under a key or a loose cable can knock out one key or a whole row. Unlike a desktop keyboard, you can't just swap it in a minute, so it pays to know exactly which keys fail before you take it for repair. The tool above opens in laptop mode, with the compact arrow keys and Fn key placed the way most Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus and Acer models have them.
A quick laptop keyboard check
- Click once on the drawn keyboard so Tab, Space and the F keys stay on this page.
- Press each row from left to right: the F row, numbers, letters, then Shift, Ctrl, Alt and the arrows.
- On a 15 or 16-inch laptop with a number pad, turn on Number pad and press Num Lock before testing it.
- Type two or three sentences at normal speed to catch double letters.
- Look at Not pressed yet. Anything listed there after you pressed it is not reaching the laptop.
Laptop keys that behave differently
Fn and the F row
Laptop makers put brightness, volume and Wi-Fi controls on the F keys. Some laptops send F1 to F12 by default and the media action with Fn; others do the reverse. Either way, the Fn key itself is read inside the keyboard and never reaches the browser, so it shows striped and never lights up. Volume, brightness and media keys that do reach the browser appear under Other keys found. Many laptops also have an Fn Lock that swaps the two, often Fn with Esc. The exact key depends on the model, so check your laptop's manual.
Arrow keys
Laptops squeeze Up and Down into half-height keys. Test both carefully, since half keys are the easiest to break when cleaning.
Keys that go to Windows
The Windows key, Print Screen and shortcuts such as Alt+Tab may go to the system before the page sees them. Use the Full screen button so Chrome and Edge pass more of them to the page.
What the pattern of failures tells you
| Pattern | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| One key dead or sticky | Dirt or liquid under that keycap, or a broken key clip |
| Several keys in a line or block dead | Ribbon cable or keyboard circuit, often after a spill |
| Keys type two letters (orange) | Worn or dirty key contacts |
| A key keeps repeating (red) | A key held down by debris or a swollen part underneath |
| Wrong characters, such as @ and " swapped | The keyboard language in your system settings, not a fault |
That last one confuses many people in India: laptops bought abroad or set to the UK layout put @ and " in different places. If the drawing shows the right key position (the code in Last key) but the wrong character appears, change the input language to English (India) or English (US) in your settings.
Before you visit a service centre
Shut the laptop down, tilt it and tap gently, or blow around the keys. Restart and test again. If the same keys still fail, tap Copy result and keep the list for the technician. If the laptop is under warranty, the brand's service centre is the safest place for a keyboard replacement, since a wrong part or a torn cable is easy to cause. For a working laptop with one bad key, a cheap USB keyboard is a handy stop-gap; you can test that here too. Before a video call, try the mic test as well, and see more checks on the phone and device tests page.

Frequently asked questions
How do I test my laptop keyboard online?
Open this page on the laptop, click the drawn keyboard once and press every key. Working keys turn green. Keys still white under Not pressed yet after you pressed them are not reaching the laptop.
Some keys on my laptop stopped working. Is it hardware or software?
If the keys also fail on this page and in the BIOS or setup screen, it's usually hardware. If they work here but not in one app, check that app's shortcuts or your keyboard language settings instead.
Does it work for Dell, HP and Lenovo laptops?
Yes. It works on any laptop brand in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Choose Laptop, and turn on Number pad if your laptop has one on the right side.
How do I test the function keys and Fn key?
Press F1 to F12 directly, then hold Fn and press them again. On many laptops one of the two gives brightness or volume, which shows under Other keys found. Fn itself never reaches the computer, so it doesn't light up.
Should I test the keyboard before buying a used laptop?
Yes. Open this page on the laptop in the shop and press every key, then type a few sentences. It takes two minutes and catches dead or double-typing keys that a quick look can miss.
