About the GATE uploads
Students in their third year of a degree or later, graduates seeking postgraduate or doctoral admission, and people aiming at PSU jobs that use GATE scores all apply through GOAPS, the online system run for GATE 2027 by IIT Madras. Indian nationals register through DigiLocker, which supplies the name, date of birth and verified ID details. While you register, a live photo of your face is captured, so use a computer with a webcam or a phone with at least a 5 MP camera, in a well-lit place. You also upload a passport-size colour photo, not older than three months, and a signature image; both are checked against an allowed aspect-ratio range as well as pixel and kB limits. Choose the photo with care, because GATE prints the same picture on your admit card and on the score card, which stays valid for three years.

GATE photo and signature size (2026 notice)
| Upload | Size | File size | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photograph | 276 × 354 px | 5–600 KB | JPG | Official: colour passport size photo, 3.5 cm wide x 4.5 cm high, white background, face 60-70% of the photo, JPEG/JPG, 5-600 kB, aspect ratio 0.66 to 0.89, minimum 200 x 260 px and maximum 530 x 690 px. Converted at 200 DPI: 3.5 / 2.54 x 200 = 276 px, 4.5 / 2.54 x 200 = 354 px (ratio 0.78, inside the allowed range). Normal spectacles allowed without glare. A live photo is also captured at registration; the uploaded photo is printed on the admit card and score card. |
| Signature | 450 × 150 px* | 3–300 KB | JPG | Official: JPEG/JPG, 3-300 kB, height:width 1:R with R between 2.75 and 3.75, minimum 250 x 80 px and maximum 580 x 180 px, signature covering 70-80% of the image, black or dark blue ink; not in all capitals and not initials. The notice gives a range, not one size; 450 x 150 px (R = 3.0) sits inside it. |
*The notice fixes the KB range but not an exact pixel size, so the tool uses a suggested default that fits the range.

How to resize your GATE photo and signature
- The GATE size is already selected above. Switch between Photo, Signature at the top.
- Upload a clear photo from your phone, or a scan or photo of your signature on white paper.
- Drag and zoom so your face (or signature) fills the frame. Use Rotate if it is sideways.
- For the signature, keep Clean background on so the paper turns pure white and the ink stays dark.
- Press Download JPG. The result shows the exact pixel size and KB, within the GATE limits.
Tips so your GATE upload is not rejected
- Photographs that do not meet the specification can lead to rejection of the GATE application, and the application fee will not be refunded.
- A photo with glare on your spectacles is not acceptable; if the glare cannot be avoided, take the photograph without the glasses.
- A signature in all capitals, initials only, a digital signature, or ink other than black or dark blue is not allowed.
- If your signature at the examination does not match the signature you uploaded, you could be disqualified.
- Use a recent colour photo with a plain light background and even light on your face, with no cap or dark glasses.
- Sign in black ink inside the space, and do not sign in capital letters unless the notice allows it.
- Open the downloaded file once to check it looks sharp before you upload it to the portal.

GATE photo and signature FAQs
What is the photo size for GATE?
276 × 354 px, 5–600 KB, JPG, as given in the official notice. The resizer above is already set to this size.
What is the signature size for GATE?
450 × 150 px, 3–300 KB, JPG. The notice fixes only the KB range, so the pixel size is our suggested default. Sign with a black pen on plain white paper and keep "Clean background" on.
What happens if GATE finds a problem with my photo after I apply?
Every application is scrutinised, including the clarity of the photograph and signature. If something is wrong, the defect is marked and you are told by email or SMS/WhatsApp to fix it within a set time. Log in to the application portal regularly to check the status of any defect, and rectify it promptly.
Will the photo I upload appear on the GATE admit card?
Yes. The GATE 2027 admit card and score card carry the same photograph you submitted with the application. The admit card is valid only if your photograph and signature on it are clear. Bring a printed copy, preferably in colour on A4 paper, together with the original photo ID you gave in the application.
Can I wear a head covering in the GATE photo?
Head coverings are not permitted except for religious reasons. If you wear one for religious reasons, your face must still be fully shown, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and both edges of the face.
Can I take the GATE photo with my phone?
Yes. Stand facing a plain light wall in daylight, hold the phone at eye level and take a sharp, front-facing photo. Upload it here, drag and zoom so your face fills the frame, and the tool saves it at the exact pixel size and KB range.
How do I check the size of my file before uploading?
The result box under the preview shows the exact pixel size and file size in KB. On a phone you can also open the file details in the Files or Gallery app. On a computer, right-click the file and open Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac).
What if my file is smaller than the minimum KB?
Small images can come out below the minimum even at full quality. This tool then adds a harmless comment block inside the JPG so the file reaches the minimum size, while the picture stays exactly the same.
