वसीयतनामा in plain Hindi

For many families, the person making the will is a parent or grandparent who reads Hindi more comfortably than English. A will they can read and understand themselves is better than one they sign on trust. This page opens the will tool with Hindi selected, so the draft comes out as a वसीयतनामा: the opening declaration, every numbered paragraph, your signature and the witnesses' attestation, all in Hindi.

The Hindi is written in the first person, the way wills are usually written, and the verbs follow the gender of the person making the will. A man's will says “रद्द करता हूँ” and a woman's says “रद्द करती हूँ”, based on the relation you choose (पुत्र, पति or पुत्री, पत्नी).

What the Hindi will contains

  1. पूर्व वसीयतें रद्द: all earlier wills and codicils are cancelled, and this is declared the last will.
  2. स्वस्थ मानसिक स्थिति: the will is made freely, in a sound state of mind, without pressure.
  3. परिवार और संपत्ति: optional lists of family members and main assets, labelled (क), (ख), (ग).
  4. किसे क्या मिलेगा: each gift with the person's name and relation, then where everything else goes.
  5. लाभार्थी की पहले मृत्यु: whether a gift passes to that person's heirs or to whoever gets the rest.
  6. निष्पादक और संरक्षक: the executor, an alternate, and a guardian wish for minor children.
  7. गवाहों का अनुप्रमाणन: a statement that you signed in the witnesses' presence and they signed in yours, with spaces for their names and addresses.

Signing it properly

Section 63 of the Indian Succession Act, 1925 asks for two things: you sign (or put your thumb mark on) the will, and at least two witnesses attest it, each having seen you sign or heard you acknowledge your signature, and each signing in your presence. If you can't read Hindi script well enough to check names and numbers, ask someone you trust to read the draft aloud before you sign. Write names exactly as in Aadhaar and property papers, and sign every page.

Registration is optional under section 18 of the Registration Act, 1908, but many families register a Hindi will at the sub-registrar's office as extra proof. Keep the original safe and tell the executor where it is.

If you change your mind later, make a fresh will rather than cutting or overwriting the old one: the new will’s first paragraph cancels all earlier wills.

This is a draft format, not legal advice. Muslim wills follow Muslim personal law, and complicated estates need a lawyer. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Hindi print correctly?

Yes. Hindi lines are drawn with a proper Devanagari font in the PDF, so matras and joined letters look right. The Word file has the same Hindi text, which you can edit.

Does the Hindi change for a woman making the will?

Yes. Choose ‘पुत्री’ or ‘पत्नी’ as your relation and the verbs change to the feminine form, for example करती हूँ instead of करता हूँ.

Who should be the witnesses?

Two adults you trust who get nothing under the will and who are likely to be available later. Each must see you sign, or hear you acknowledge your signature, and sign in your presence.
