When you are too unwell to go in
Falling sick is the most common reason anyone writes a leave letter, and usually the worst time to think about wording. This page opens the office sick-leave letter, but the same tool has sick-leave letters for school (written by the student or a parent) and for college. A good sick leave application is short. It says you are unwell, gives the exact days you will be away, mentions any medical certificate and, at work, who will look after urgent tasks. It does not need a detailed medical history.

Day counts, without mistakes
Enter the first and last day of leave. The tool counts both days, so 15 to 17 October is 3 days, and writes the dates in full. For a single day, leave the last day empty and the letter says "on 15 October 2026". If you are already back at work or school, enter the dates you were away; the wording still reads naturally.
The medical certificate line
Choose one of three options: Attached, Will submit later (useful when you are writing from home on the first morning) or Not attached. Whether a certificate is needed, and after how many days, is set by your school or employer, not by a single national rule, so check your leave policy or ask the class teacher.
Sending it
- Office: most workplaces want sick leave by email or in the HR system as early as possible on the first day. Press Email to open your email app with the subject and letter filled in, or Copy text to paste it into a chat with your manager.
- School: print the PDF and send it with a sibling or friend, or give it to the class teacher when the student returns. A parent's signature is usually expected for younger children.
- College: address it to the head of department or class coordinator and attach the certificate if your attendance rules ask for one.
Hindi and Word versions

Yes. If you could not inform in advance, send the letter on the day you return with the dates you were away. For school, the 'Was absent' letter includes a short apology for not informing earlier.
Is a medical certificate compulsory?
That depends on your school's rules or your company's leave policy. Many ask for one when sick leave runs for several days. The letter can say the certificate is attached, will follow, or leave it out.
