Lost your ATM card? Block first, then write

A lost or stolen debit card is urgent. The fastest way to stop misuse is your bank's helpline, app, net banking or SMS blocking service, which work at any hour. The written application comes next: it puts the loss on record at your branch, asks the bank to confirm the block, and requests a new card.

This page opens the Block lost ATM / debit card letter. The same group has a second letter for a new or replacement card when yours is damaged, expired or never arrived.

What the block letter says

  • The card's last 4 digits only, so the bank can identify it.
  • Whether it was lost or stolen, the date, and optionally where.
  • Whether you have already blocked it through the helpline or app. If yes, the letter asks the bank to confirm a permanent block; if not, it asks them to block it immediately.
  • A request to tell you about any transaction after that date.
  • A request for a new card, if you want one.

The tool only accepts 4 digits in the card field, so a full number can't slip in by mistake.

Replacement for a damaged or expired card

Choose New or replacement ATM card and pick the reason. For a damaged card, add its last 4 digits. Choose whether you will collect it at the branch or want it sent to your registered address. Banks usually send the PIN separately or ask you to set it at an ATM or in the app; follow your bank's instructions.

If money has already gone

If you see withdrawals or payments you did not make, report them to the bank immediately and use the Unauthorised transaction / fraud letter in the Complaints group. The Reserve Bank of India's 6 July 2017 circular on limiting customer liability links how much of the loss a customer bears to how quickly the bank is told, so speed matters. Also report the fraud on the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in, and write the complaint number in your letter.

Hindi and business accounts

Choose हिन्दी for the same letter in Hindi: "मेरा एटीएम / डेबिट कार्ड, जिसके अंतिम चार अंक … हैं, … को खो गया।" For a firm's account, add the firm name and turn on the letterhead to print it on your company paper with an authorised signatory line.

Charges for a replacement card and delivery times vary by bank. MuftTools is not linked to any bank, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first if my ATM card is lost?

Block it immediately through your bank's 24-hour helpline, mobile app, net banking or SMS service. Then give the branch a written application for the record and for a new card. Check your account for any transactions after the loss.

Should I write my card number in the application?

Only the last 4 digits. Never write the full card number, CVV, PIN or any OTP in a letter or share them with anyone, including people claiming to be from the bank.

How do I apply for a new ATM card if mine is damaged or expired?

Choose 'New or replacement ATM card' and the reason: first card, damaged, expired or not received. Say whether you will collect it from the branch or want it at your registered address.

What if money was taken from my account after the card was stolen?

Report it to the bank at once. Under the RBI's 2017 circular on limiting customer liability, how quickly you report affects how much of the loss you may bear. Use the 'Unauthorised transaction / fraud' letter and also report it on the cyber crime helpline 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
